Logline:
‘Contaminated water triggers Tourette-like symptoms in the village. Two dysfunctional Vietnam veterans must expose the source before madness spreads out of control.’
This ‘Count of Monte Cristo’ like revenge story, with a zombie genre subversion, begins in 1969... in tunnels beneath the Iron Triangle, Vietnam.
MAJOR DINH, the number one son of a blue-blooded family and a South Vietnamese army officer, falls victim to a cruel war crime, robbing his family and himself of any future bloodlines.
Three New Zealand army tunnel rats tortured, flushed out, and captured Major Dinh from under the earth.
As far as Major Dinh is concerned, the Vietnam conflict has never been over, and retribution for the loss of his manhood will be exacted one way or another, on two, or thousands of New Zealanders.
The problem for everyone in the path of his wrath was, he went on to become a powerfully aligned four-star General. He became involved in governmental research into pathogens and contaminants and also had a firm hand in the development of his country’s psychological warfare program.
Over the next two decades, Major Dinh and his family meticulously planned ‘Operation Zombie Water’, causing the poisoning of thousands, a ‘knives out’ community civil war, and escalating tensions between New Zealand and Vietnam, again.
Returning to New Zealand, the three veterans grapple with adjustment disorders. One becomes a court Bailiff; the other two form a dysfunctional family as BILL BAILUS marries WALLY WETSUIT's sweet daughter, but sweetness turns to chaos, and soon the dysfunctional family grows exponentially.
'Operation Zombie Water' is given the green light on October 27th, 1994 at approximately 2100 hours.'
A low dosage of contaminant is given to the cat named ‘General Claude Balls’. By the end of episode one, the villagers will grow increasingly irrational and aggressive, turning on those in the community who do not drink the water, believing them to be wrong.
The situation becomes surreal; confusion grows, accusations fly, and unrest boils. The villagers slide into a comical civil war, as the villagers turn on one of their own, accusing, and putting on trial, a local veterinarian student, accused of being the serial, ‘Lake Okareka Cat Killer’.
With the people under the influence of the contamination, his situation turns from a misdemeanor into a capital punishment case, to be exacted by bewildered vigilantes.
By the end of the first season, the New Zealand government will have woken up as road rage incidents increase, as do a surge of irrational crimes.
Contaminations will have exploded in scope, with a boom of psychotic zombies running riot across different parts of the country. Mistakes are made. The media presents the wrong message to the public. Ethnic chaos ensues.
As further seasons continue, like small dogs snapping at each other, tensions rise between the governments of New Zealand and Vietnam. New Zealand threatens to demand the arrest of General Dinh. However, Vietnam, relying only on imports of milk powder, butter, and cheese, finds an official response unworthy.
The scope of the story expands, as what the New Zealanders did to General Dinh surfaces in Asia. Sheltered by influential friends and his government, Dinh remains hidden, playing a strategic game behind the scenes. The people stand behind him, turning him into an unlikely hero.
The final confrontation occurs after the landings at New Zealand airports and ports, of several aircraft and ships, carrying fighting-aged male tourists. They are processed only to mysteriously vanish, each possessing extensive visas. The situation hints at an inside job.
Wally and the rats awaken to the profound consequences born from the actions of their youth, as the village zombies turn on them.
Ultimately everyone is on the trail of Wally and his fellow rat, BILL BAILUS. From Major Dinh and his family to the villagers, and the New Zealand government. Will Dinh get to them first? Or can they outwit him again, save the village, the country, and themselves?
