LOGLINE:

An alien life form, which arrives on a meteorite by the home of an accountant in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1964, makes the accountant unusually popular in order to accomplish its plan of regenerating itself as a human to return to its home.

SYNOPSIS:

In 1964, a meteorite crashes in a pasture and comes to rest against the foundation of the house of nerdy CPA Tom Weatherall, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. When Tom touches the meteorite, he is possessed by sentient nanobots that subtly and overtly control his actions and thoughts, and he is subsequently hounded by strangers attracted by the meteorite’s power, including a gorgeous newspaper reporter named Nancy. The nanobots compel Tom and Nancy together, and they have a child. The child, Micah, has an accelerated growth rate and is hyper intelligent. He makes Tom weld a portal device in Tom and Nancy’s garage. Tom and Nancy, heady with alien persuasion and parental pride, struggle with the reality of their quiet, sweet son who reads dozens of books in a sitting and claims to be ten thousand years old. Soon Micah grows into a boy of elementary school age and begins asking to be taken to Los Alamos to get materials to finish his portal. Tom and Nancy try to control Micah but his abilities are worrisome, and they decide that with his growth disorder, they should enroll him in school for a few months to avoid the government noticing him, and make plans to leave town. Micah, using a friendly classmate, Amber, and her scientist father as a cover, sneaks onto Los Alamos and obtains the portal materials. He promises Amber he will return and then heads to Tom’s office in Santa Fe, where Tom has hidden the portal. When Micah enters the office he finds Tom and Nancy waiting for him, who after Micah’s disappearance have figured he would go to the portal. They demand he stop whatever it is he is doing, but Micah says he must return to his world to save it from destruction. He tells Nancy she is pregnant and says she and Tom won’t remember him, and puts them to sleep. Micah completes work on the portal and connects an electrical cable to the portal, blacking out the town, and disappears in a flash of light. Ten years later, we see Tom and Nancy sitting on their front porch, while their two children play in the front yard, discussing the new neighbor who has moved into the neighborhood: a young and brilliant physics professor from someplace far away who is marrying Amber, the Weatherall’s babysitter. Camera frames the eighteen-year-olds, Micah and Amber, washing a car in front of Tom and Nancy’s house, and Micah smiles knowingly.
