In the grimy backstreets of an English city, a young man suffering a death of the soul fights to save a once-famous nightclub from ruin.
SYNOPSIS:
Welcome to Monks Nightclub, the likes of which you find in any city. At the very end of the ‘strip’ called Gin Lane, it is home to the lost, the lonely, and those in perpetual limbo — the reprobates, thronging to the bar every weekend to slake an endless thirst. They will drink and dance, chew each other’s faces off, and upload every second of this to Instagram for their followers, until the well is as dry and as black as their souls, and the Assistant Manager is closing all the fire exits as a new dawn fades. He then makes his way slowly home, a young man grappling with a death of the soul, struggling to remember who is...who he was... before this place claimed everything from him...
But the glory days are gone. Cracks are starting to show. Everyone in town says that Monks is not like it used to be. It's rotting from the inside, a haven for rats and other pests. New owners with wayward ideas are determined to clean up this place of historic moral bankruptcy, and bring the big bands back to have their breakthrough moment on a dying dance floor. But Monks is a ticking time bomb, who knows how many months it has left? But as one of the last great nightclubs and grassroots music venues still open, Munks means more to people than they will care to admit. For many, it is all they have…for some, they would like to burn the fucking place to the ground.
For the enigmatic Assistant Manager, it's where he hides from facing his own traumas. Although this attempt to lose himself completely is somewhat complicated by the fact he is at the mercy of a sadistic Manager, who is increasingly making his life a living hell…gruelling extra shifts, expecting miracles, blaming ‘missing’ money on him, taking the credit for his hard work, the Assistant Manager pulls Monks out of hole after hole…but he desperately needs to find a way out. If only he could find one…
Amongst the rot, the decay, the crime, and the hedonism, he is the glue that keeps Monks together — even though his personal life is a ruin, his health is a footnote, and he’s gradually losing grip on reality. Then a girl comes into the club one night who looks remarkably like his ex-girlfriend, and he suddenly has a new obsession...one which spirals out of control when the girl goes missing after a night out, and finds her passport in the club, horrible things that someone is going to do to her written on the final page...
As events unfold, and everything deteriorates in the underbelly of this grimy English city, the only sure thing is the fallout will be catastrophic.
