SYNOPSIS:
Twelve years after her mother committed a brutal suicide, MADELEINE KRAMER is forced to return with her family to the childhood home where the tragedy occurred. Madeleine is married to MICHAEL and has two children NATANIA (12) and SAM (3), but they have also lost a four year daughter (LILY). Michael blames himself for his daughter's death and has struggled to overcome his grief, which has plunged him into gambling and prescription medication addiction, debt and has consequently lost his business and the family home. Michael, is a builder by trade and sees the move to Madeleine's childhood home as a fresh start for him and the family, with the idea being that he will renovate the rundown old house in order for them to sell for a large profit and begin a new life together. The family quickly settle into their new life with Madeleine starting work as a teaching assistant at the school Natania attends and making maximum effort to reignite her marriage. Natania is quite a strange artistic child, a loner who struggles to make friends and is fascinated with the morbid aspects of life, especially her new home and it's history. This all changes though when Natania is rushed to hospital after suffering a suspected epileptic fit. Natania returns home after a couple of days, but is confined to her bedroom and appears to physically have an adverse effect to the medication prescribed. Soon after Michael begins to see hallucinations of Lily around the house and Madeleine is also tormented by nightmares and hallucinations of her dead parents, which makes her question her sanity. Madeleine finds an antique dagger, which belonged to her mother, that she discovers was once owned by the poet Victor Neuberg and blessed by the occultist Aleister Crowley in a demonic ritual. She becomes convinced that this is linked to a demon called Choronzon, who she thinks is responsible for all her gruesome experiences in the house. After Michael refuses to believe her theories, Sam is injured in a nail gun incident and she discovers that Michael has been secretly gambling, Madeleine begins to regret her decision to return to her childhood home. It is only once Michael is threatened by his own supernatural experience, Madeleine has a breakdown in work and Natania goes missing that they discover the terrifying history of the house and the true meaning of family. Aberrant is a psychological horror about the disintegration of a marriage in which the Haunted House, Occult and Possession tropes of the genre are taken and twisted into a story that is as scary as it is dramatic.
