THE FASTEST GAME IN THE WORLD
By Jane Nolan

GENRE: Sports, Drama
LOGLINE:

In the West of Ireland, a washed-up Englishman seeks redemption by reviving the game of Hurling in his home town, teaming up with a fierce teen and a ragtag group of rebels and refugees to battle personal demons and corrupt local politics for a shot at glory.

SYNOPSIS:

Alo Waldron, an embittered middle-aged Englishman, returns to his childhood home in Castlemore, Ireland, where Hurling—the sport he loves—has been all but forgotten. With a murky past in Manchester and estranged relationships, Alo seeks redemption, but the town is obsessed with football, leaving little room for Hurling.

At a local Gaelic club, Alo meets Sunny Kehoe, a fiery mixed-race teenager who’s passionate about Camogie, the women's version of hurling. Together, they hatch a plan to form a hurling team with players drawn from unconventional places: tennis clubs, cricket fields, and even a Direct Provision Centre housing refugees.

Their journey is not without obstacles. Miles Craughwell, a corrupt local businessman, resents Alo’s return and views the revival of Hurling as a threat to his control over the town. Furthermore, tensions within the community escalate due to the inclusion of two Congolese boys, Angel and Didier, whose presence challenges the town’s xenophobic undercurrents.

As the team trains and bonds, Alo’s leadership and Sunny’s fiery determination begin to turn this group of misfits into a real team. They face their first few matches with trepidation, but soon their raw talent and passion start to shine. However, darker forces are at play, and Miles is determined to sabotage their efforts.

Ultimately, the team’s success on the field reflects the personal growth of each character, especially Alo, who must come to terms with his past mistakes, his unacknowledged alcoholism and learn to connect with those around him. With the final match looming at Croke Park, the team must face not only their toughest opponents but also the fractures within their own community.
