A first-gen Indian American teen rebels against traditional Asian expectations to pursue her artistic dream but runs smack into modern American prejudice that threatens her future and family.
SYNOPSIS:
Deepa never intended for her spark of creativity to set her world on fire!
A first-gen Indian American teen, Deepa obediently trains to be a math superstar. But when Chandy, the grandfather she never knew existed, shows up unannounced, he inspires her to pursue her true passions: painting, and the super cute (and white) Micah.
All good, until her controversial paintings convince some she may be a terrorist… Oops.
Deepa is suspended from school and faces possible expulsion. Her father accuses Chandy of being a bad influence and threatens to send him away. Meanwhile, protests against her mount, Deepa discovers why Chandy disappeared years ago, and all hopes of being with Micah are thrown out the window.
Deepa must find a way to balance her duty and her desires, her culture and her creativity, and her family and her future. A problem no calculator can help solve.
