Often it is the untold part of their story and often can be the most interesting. Its comforting to know we share same or similar personal experiences as those Directors. There is one trait that I though was evidently necessary and each guest must have had tons of: persistence. Without it they would have exit the game just about when they "lost their way". Great round table. A word on the Butler: loved it. Ok! may be two words.
Persistence...Probably the biggest takeaway, Emile. You not only have to have a thick skin when playing this game, but you have to be willing to hang in. If there was ever an industry where "It's a marathon, not a sprint" served as an appropriate motto, this is it.
Hello Melissa, thank you for the connection. Cheers.
In South Africa we are taking cinemas back to the masses. The plan is to open 1200 mini 60 seat cinemas in the communities and have ticket prices at $3 to $5 including refreshments. We estimate we can add 50% to the SA box office profit. I know SA is a tiny market, but we have to do something to help fix the world.
Can you imagine, how people would hawk the tickets, if all theaters in the US would do this in unison?

Expand commentI think it would be wonderful. I have just presented to the Durban International Film Festival. I calculated that we can add R350 million per annum to the Film Makers PROFIT !. The Box Office Turnover was R800 Million, so adding 45% in PROFIT is like adding 100% in Turnover. We can show 6 x 1hr Educational Shorts/Documentaries and 4 x 2hr Feature Films per day, times 365 days, times R50 ($5) per screening hour, times 1200 mini cinemas = R306 Million ($30 Million). Small change in the World market, but massive in SA terms. (we only have 50 million people) BTW US $1 = ZA R10

ReaGilè has just presented the ReaGilè Cinema Project to the Durban International Film Festival in South Africa, to total disbelief. ReaGilè Cinemas are calculated to add R350 million per annum to the Film Makers PROFIT ! in South Africa. (The SA 2012 Box Office Turnover was R800 Million, so adding R350m in PROFIT is like adding 100% in Turnover.) What if we could do the same in the rest of the world. ADD 45% to FILM MAKERS PROFIT. ReaGilè Community Cinemas show 6 x 1hr Educational Shorts/Documentaries and 4 x 2hr Feature Films per day, times 365 days, times $5 per screening hour, times 1200 mini cinemas = ± $30 Million. Small change in the World market, but massive in a 50 million population. What if you could do it in YOUR COUNTRY ? US $1 = ZA R10
The future may not be the theatres, rather the home movie nights will be the go. As TV screens are getting larger with brilliant clarity and becoming more affordable, and more people have an entertainment rooms, invite family and friends and the unlimited pop corn is free. Unbeatable.!
Popcorn not quite free, but we can pop organic corn and use real butter...;-)
It's not free, but still cheaper. $4.00 for a large drink and another $3 dollar for popcorn have become more than insulting!
You guys are missing the plot. You all think in terms of a dwindling audience. Why not think in terms of MAKING MOVIES AFFORDABLE TO THE MASSES ? US population 313 million x $1 profit per person to watch a movie in a cinema = $157 million per hour.
As a new entrant in the industry this is a great insight. 10 out of 10 RB. Cheers.
You're saying we stuck the landing? I'll take a 10 any day. Thanks, Emile!

Everybody in the film industry is working on making films, and bitching about the sad state of the film industry because they cannot sell their films !. Well, the film industry is shooting itself in the foot. What about concentrating on MAKING SURE YOU HAVE A MARKET FOR YOUR PRODUCT ! If there are no cinema's to show your product, why make the product. I'm concentrating on supplying the venues for the oversupply of movies out there. I and my clients have the demand, "at the right price", do you want to sell your product to us? Or sit on it and make nothing ? But!!! Remain a starting artist? Come and talk to me at the Durban International Film Festival. are millions of people waiting to see really good movies in cinemas, "at realistic prices". Let's give the client what he/she wants !
Mark, great insight. Thanks for sharing. A lot is said on film making, would Kickstarter platform work for a TV production? What rewards ideas do you suggest? Cheers Emile

Expand commentI mostly see what my friends and colleagues send me, which is mostly films. I've also seen books and web series, and probably a TV pilot or two. You can certainly research Kickstarter and see if you can find TV pilots, and see what their rewards are. Certainly, many of the "standard" rewards would be different, but some would be the same: a part in the show, a character named after you, a credit on the production, etc. I would want to tie the rewards into the subject matter of the show, and of course, you've got to figure out what you have of value that doesn't cost you anything. A friend is about to shoot a no-budget feature and he's going to Kickstarter post. He teaches acting classes and edits actor's reels. Those are going to be rewards at higher levels. Good luck!
Thank you, appreciate your response. E
Great read and insight RB. The future for Stage 32 sounds promising. If you are in Sydney (Australia), lets share some Aussie wine.
I just may take you up on that, Emile! Thanks for reading.
Is there room for more at that bottle?
