A reclusive country veterinarian with a mysterious healing power has managed to keep his secret for years… until now. But will he survive after the secret is revealed?
SYNOPSIS:
LUCAS DANIEL was born with the power to heal.
It would seem like a gift, but it’s not.
For Lucas has no control over this power. If he touches someone with a fatal injury or disease, the process of healing them will kill Lucas. So his mother isolates him from the world and forbids him from having contact with anyone.
Lucas obliges until the age of ten, when – desperate for company – he secretly befriends DARCY WELLS (10), a vibrant girl who moves in next door.
When Darcy accidentally sees Lucas heal an animal suffering a minor injury, she promises to keep his secret and a strong bond forms between the two.
But when a fire breaks out in Darcy’s apartment, leaving her life hanging in the balance, Lucas is left with the one choice his mother has tried to keep him from making his whole life.
In the hospital, Lucas takes his chances and heals Darcy’s lungs. But before he can heal the burns to her face, he collapses and dies… Until the fast actions of doctors bring him back and his mother whisks him away before anyone can discover what he’s capable of.
Twenty years later, Lucas has become a reclusive veterinarian in a small town. Never seen without gloves – which he claims is due to a medical disorder – Lucas is considered the town freak and has hardened his heart against the world.
Then his life takes a significant turn.
First, Lucas discovers that his neighbor, cattle farmer BRYCE HARGRAVES, has been hiding an outbreak of foot and mouth disease. In a desperate attempt to prevent Lucas from alerting the authorities and destroying his life, Bryce shoots Lucas - but is horrified to discover he can’t kill him.
Then Darcy moves into town. Even though decades have passed, Lucas recognizes her from the scars on her face – the scars he failed to heal. However, Darcy is so consumed by her loneliness and the shame of feeling like “a hideous freak”, she doesn’t see the boy she once knew in the very different man Lucas has become.
Lucas is instantly drawn to Darcy, but fears that if she remembers him, she’ll assume he can heal her scars. And that’s the one thing he can’t do – heal a wound that has already healed. So he keeps his identity hidden, while allowing a new friendship – then a romance – to brew between them.
Meanwhile, Lucas’s unstable, ruined neighbor, Bryce feels he has nothing left to live for except exacting revenge on Lucas. Believing he can’t hurt Lucas physically, he hunts down Darcy, forcing Lucas to make the impossible choice between his own life and the woman he loves.
