SYNOPSIS:
Postville is a screen adaptation (rights acquired) of the award-winning stageplay by Don Fried, which was inspired by the nationally renowned book by Stephen Bloom, which was based on a true story. When the price of kosher meat skyrockets, a group of Hasidic Jews leave Brooklyn to open a meatpacking plant just outside the dying town of Postville, Iowa. The locals try their best to welcome the newcomers, but things don’t go so well: “Come to the Christmas bazaar!” “We’ll let you know.” “And the high school dance!” “We don’t do that.” “Well, you can’t miss Saturday’s spare rib barbeque!” Oy vey! Then, when Hispanic workers come in droves, the culture clash proves to be too much. With tensions rising, the locals launch a campaign to increase their tax revenue by annexing the plant. But on the day of the referendum, a raid from Immigration threatens to sever the town’s new-found lifeline. Postville is a powerful and timely screenplay about cultural differences and similarities as people pursue the American Dream. Please enjoy the script.
