THE BRAIN INJURIES
By Terry Brody

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

A star, high school football player suffers a traumatic brain injury that ends his promising future in athletics but unlocks hidden musical genius.

SYNOPSIS:

BILLY GAMBLE loves music as much as he loves football but he only has talent for the latter – until a devastating hit flips the script.

The sensitivity to light and debilitating headaches are consequences of the hit and no doctor in his right mind would allow Billy to play football again. His lifelong dream of going pro is dead. And if things couldn’t get any worse; as Billy distances himself from football and school, his cheerleader, girlfriend grows closer to his best friend, the quarterback.

But there’s an unexpected side-effect of the injury. Just as the devastating reality of no more football sinks in, Billy sees something only he can see. One evening after dinner, Billy’s mom, PATTI, a high school, music teacher sits down at the piano. While suffering through his mother’s inconsistent playing, Billy sees notes rise from the piano. Even stranger; he knows them, although he’s not sure how.

He even recognizes the classical piece and begins to wiggle his fingers and tap the dinner table aping his mother’s hands. But he’s curiously annoyed by her numerous errors. When she gives up, frustrated by her own rust and her family’s lack of enthusiasm, she heads to the sink to wash dishes. Billy moves to the piano and plays the same classical piece perfectly – despite never taking a single lesson. A dish crashes to the floor as Patti makes the sign of the cross. Billy plays for the next six hours, eventually realizing he can suddenly sing as well.

Patti finally got the music prodigy she always wanted and MATT, Billy’s father, lost the only way he knew how to relate to his son – through their mutual love of football. But Billy struggles with his sudden inability to relate to his father and the pressure he now feels from his mother to develop his new talent.

Of course, Patti and Matt have their own issues to deal with as Matt struggles to get past Patti’s distant infidelity. As a result, Patti is tempted back into her ex-lover’s arms. And how will Billy ever redeem his father’s unfulfilled, gridiron dreams?

There’s only a dozen documented cases of Acquired Savant Syndrome and since Billy’s life at home has been turned upside down, he agrees to go to a research center in the city. There he meets HOLDEN WILSON, a nineteen year-old with the sudden talent to play the guitar that rivals the likes of Jimi Hendrix.

Holden convinces Billy to start a rock band together so they recruit ALEXIS JENNINGS. Although she’s Billy’s classmate and nearby neighbor, they didn’t exactly belong to the same clique. She’s talented, beautiful and unwilling to admit she’s had a crush on Billy since Freshman year. They’re not without their obstacles but talent isn’t one of them.
