America’s first trauma surgeon, Dr. George Goodfellow, is a truly epic story. The medical community rejected his radical ideas that saved lives, while his inner demons consumed him. SYNOPSIS:
When the established medical community shunned his methods, Dr. George E. Goodfellow (ages 20-54) moved west, where his unbridled techniques saved lives. Dr. Goodfellow pioneered reconstructive and antiseptic surgery, an innovator in teaching practices and anesthesia.
He utilized the latest technology of the time or invented his own. As the first to operate on abdominal wounds and have patients survive, he became known as the Gunfighters’ Surgeon. This story mirrors alcohol/drug abuse, gun violence, and STDs present in today’s society.
Dr. Goodfellow battled his alcoholism and syphilis while a battlefield surgeon during the Indian Wars into 1880s Tombstone, making humanitarian efforts in Tucson, Mexico, and the Spanish-American War until he died in 1910.
His Wife kept meticulous journals until her untimely death by Dr. Goodfellow’s indiscretions. His daughter was his nurse from 9 years old until her late 20s. Goodfellow's best friend had secret liaisons with Goodfellow's Wife. Also, rich characters in Presidents, Generals, and the Apache Geronimo.
