GENRE: Action, War
LOGLINE: In a world of universal government thriving on martial law, a small group of rebels join with global sects globally to overthrow the same government that took over 25 years earlier.

SYNOPSIS:

In the year 2050, the west has fallen while the east has become the world’s new super power. A new world order has taken effect since the joint rule of the Middle East and N. Korea. Food and global resources are extremely scarce. Many of the world’s animal species are now extinct. As dictated under new mandate, any person found guilty of any crime shall be sterilized. Any prison that exceeds 25% capacity shall have a mass extermination. Laws are strict and most punishment are carried out on site, mainly by public lashings. Restraining posts are found on every block. Public lashings and prison executions are the new forms of public entertainment as well as a deterrence and are aired as “Breaking news”. Small groups of underground rebels from around the world plan to band together to overthrow the tyrannous government and restore the democracy many have only read about via underground publications and the few survivors of the global holocaust 25 years earlier.

I. A.1. (8/27/13) PROLOGUE Voice over. Dialogue is spoken as images of war, refugees, famine, and other global war atrocities are shown BRENT The world is a different place than my parents knew. There was a nuclear holocaust which wiped out 80% of the human population. The planet was all but destroyed. Our food supply has become so scarce that it has to be rationed every week. That’s the worst day to be on the streets. Many people fight over what little they can get. Water is an even tougher battle. Contamination is so bad, both from nuclear fallout and decaying carcasses, it runs through intensive purification processes. We are rationed 56 ounces of water every week for drinking and cooking. You could chance tap water, but there’s so much bacteria in it, it’s recommended to boil before bathing. I’ve seen people not follow this advice. Once the skin infections become so severe, they are herded up, like cattle, and sent to the infectious colony where they live the rest of their lives. Sterile people are forbidden within 5 miles of the community to prevent spreading of any airborne disease. I’ve never known the freedom my parents knew. They were killed in the war. I was only 5 and my brother, Eric, was 3. My parents hid us in the basement when the Koreans invaded. The Koreans invaded our home and shot them in the head, execution style. Me and my brother were found wandering the streets by a priest who took us into his home. Father Michael has been the only father figure we have ever known. Despite the hard times, he taught us about compassion and told us stories of life before World War III. The United States was invaded from the inside. The Koreans allied with the Arab nations. Cells were planted in every major city across the globe. You would have never seen it coming. On the outside, our enemies were peaceful members of society. They were doctors, teachers, bankers, your next door neighbor. Suddenly, while the President was giving his State of the Union, there was an explosion, then everything goes silent. When communications was restored, there he was; our new global leader Chow Sin Yung. He laid down a strict new world order where laws were enforced, primarily by the Muslims thriving on a police state. And that’s how life has been for the last 25 years. I.A.2. OPENING CREDITS I.A.3. (10/6/13) EXT. DAY. Overcast look outside. City streets are really shoddy and look of years of neglect. There is no differentiation between social classes. Everyone bears the same dingy look. We approach a long line. As we progress toward the front of the line, there are people present scanning wrist codes. We see an increased security presence and Father Michael, among others, handing out weekly rations to the people. Some people try to beg for more, others get edgy and try to rush the line. Officers are constantly putting people waiting in line in check for anything they see as disorderly. OFFICER ONE Keep order here. You will all get your rations. OFFICER TWO Keep order or we will shut the lines down and you will have to wait until next week. One person tries to cut in line. He is immediately taken out and forced to the back. I.A.4. (10/6/13) Brent and Eric approach Father Michael. Father Michael secretly slides some papers and a few extra rations into Brent’s rations. Brent and Father Michael make eye contact and Brent give an unnoticeable nod. I.A.5. (10/6/13) Brent and Eric leaving food dispersion lines securing their rations in backpacks. They get about 10 steps when a man rushes past them from behind almost knocking Eric over. The man pushes a lady down and steals her rations. He is gone before Brent or Eric could do anything. I.A.6.(10/6/13) Brent and Eric help the lady up. Brent opens his bag and gives her some of their supplies. ERIC Dude, what are you doing? BRENT Did you not see what just happened? ERIC Yea, but we need those supplies. BRENT So does she. Do you understand that she has nothing until next week. We can survive on half and I’m sure we can barter to get more if it comes down to it. ERIC You’re too fucking sympathetic bro. They help the lady up and Eric starts walking off quickly in aggravation. LADY Thank you. Thank you very much. She begins crying in gratitude as she walks off cradling food close to her chest. I.A.7. (10/6/13) Brent catches up to Eric. BRENT Eric, one day you will understand. You just have to trust me on this. ERIC Yea, whatever. They approach a small rowdy crowd. The police are in the process of tying someone to a flogging pole. Ironically, it’s the same guy that mugged the lady. Eric, being strongly against this new police state, wants to intervene and starts to make his move. Brent restrains him and edges him along. They continue walking as they hear the sound of a whip and the man screaming in agonizing pain as the crowd cheers on. I.B.1. (10/6/13) INT. Brent and Eric go into tavern. The tavern looks like a run down biker bar. Dimly lit with several patrons. They sit at the end of the bar and order a couple drinks. The bartender serves drinks then goes help other patrons. Brent pulls the paper out of his backpack reads it, then puts it back. ERIC What’s that? BRENT Father Michael gave us contact information from a branch in Los Angeles and Dallas that would be of benefit to us. He also gave us some information for a local arms dealer. This is not the place to go into too much detail. Too many ears and eyes. You get my drift. ERIC Man, I am so sick of this bull shit! Living in the shadows, having to watch what we say, what we do. I would love, just for one day, experience the life mom and dad had before all this bull shit happened. I.B.2. (10/6/13) BRENT Eric, you’re my little brother. I love you more than life itself. I’ve always done my best to protect you. You have grown into your own person, and that’s what scares me. You’re quick to act, which will get you killed. Sometimes you just need to step back and let things be. ERIC You may be able to tolerate this fucked up system we live in, but I can’t. Look at this place! How can anyone like the way they live?! Eric’s voice starts to escalate and Brent takes notice as do some of the other patrons. BRENT Eric, lower your voice. People are starting to stare. ERIC Who cares! Maybe they’ll see the same thing we do and will want to fight back. BRENT Lower your voice, the police are here. A couple officers are speaking to people at the front of the pub. The patrons point the police in their general direction. Two police officers walk over to them. OFFICER 3 Is there a problem here? BRENT No officer. No problems. OFFICER 4 Someone said they heard yelling over here about a possible uprising. Is that so? BRENT No sir. My,uh, friend here, just found out his mother died. He’s very upset and wishes he could have done more for her in her last days. I’m sure you can relate, right? OFFICER 3 You need to keep your comments to yourself. Understand? That kind of talk will get you arrested. How bout you get him home. OFFICER 4 Get your head right, sir. This is your only warning. BRENT Thank you officers. I’ll get him right home. Officers maintain a presence within the tavern. Brent and Eric finish their drinks ordering another. I.B.3. (10/12/13) As they wait for their drinks, a female reporter comes on TV. FEMALE REPORTER (Ashley) We have some good news from the global agricultural committee. They tell us they have found some areas with potential use as farmland, have the least amount of contamination recorded in recent months. The area is not yet safe enough to cultivate on, but they are optimistic that it can be used, with added decontamination efforts, within the next year. Our water supplies continue to have to go through rigorous decontamination procedures. They cannot predict when it will be remotely safe enough to allow regular usage. BRENT See, things are already starting to look better. Soon we may be able to find a rural area and try living off the land, get out of the city. ERIC How can you see that as a good thing? There’s no guarantee that wherever we find will have suitable land to live on. We may still have to depend on the government. BRENT You have to learn to take the good with the bad. Life may not be perfect, but we can try to make it better. I know you want everything here and now, but it doesn’t work like that. You have to take one step at a time. FEMALE REPORTER Supreme Ruler Chow Sin Yong grants increased martial law for the most problematic area across the globe. Robbery and theft continue to be the biggest issues globally. It is reported that other crimes have dropped 2% in the last month, largely due to the criminal deterrent programs. We now take you live to Kevin as he has breaking news on a person accused of trying to break into a house. MALE REPORTER (Kevin) Thank you Ashley. I’m here live with a suspect caught trying to break into this house here behind me. He tried to deny his crime, but was only confirmed by local police when they found a gun in the suspects jacket. BARTENDER Flogging up everyone! Time to place your bets. Winner gets free drinks! Crowd cheers and starts yelling incoherently, raising hands, trying to place bets before the “show” begins. The bar is working overtime to collect bets and pass out drinks. A bartenders’ assistant writing feverously on a board. Police in the background just look on. I.B.4. (10/12/13)EXT. EVENING. MALE REPORTER As you can see now, the police are chaining the suspect onto the lashing pole here on the corner of Falco and Davidian. The crowd here started gathering as soon as the suspect was caught. I’ve spoken to a couple of witnesses and they told me that the suspect kept yelling that he lost his keys and he was trying to find a way into his home. Police identified the suspect through his arm code and concluded the suspect did not live at this residence. The police have now stripped the back of the criminal. Here comes the barbed whip. The police start cracking the back of the person tied to the lashing pole. The man screams in agonizing pain. People in the background clap and cheer. Inside the bar, the crowd gets rowdier everytime they hear the crack of the whip. The lashing goes on for 5 whips. Wow, I would hate to be on the receiving end of that. The suspect is let loose from restraints and left on the ground as the crowd begins to disperse. The police stand close by as the suspect struggles to put his shirt back on and tries to stand. That should be a reminder to the citizens of the new world: never try to break into a house, never carry a gun in public, and most importantly, don’t try to lie about it. Back to you Ashley. I.B.5.(10/12/13) INT. BAR. Looking back into the bar, Brent and Eric look disgusted as the crowd continues to cheer and pass drinks around. Brent and Eric finish their drinks then head out. ERIC When does it stop? I just want to beat the shit out of the first cop I see. They’re not even legit. They say something looks wrong, and that’s that. They play judge, jury, and executioner. What kind of justice is that? BRENT That’s just the way it is. It’s all we know. Hopefully we can get enough force together to change that. If not, at least I can say I died trying. So can you. Mom and dad would rather us die for our beliefs instead of live in a lie. ERIC You don’t remember much about mom and dad, do you? BRENT No. I was only 5 when they died. I do know they loved us very much. You know the last words mom said to us? I remember it like it was yesterday. She just hid us the basement. I was holding on to you so tight, so nobody could take you from me. As she was leaving to go back upstairs, she told us she loved us both very much. I hold on to those words, and that’s what drives me. I don’t want their deaths to go in vain. I don’t want the fall of many great nations to go in vain. I know we’re not the only ones who feel this way; that’s why we’ve spent years trying to find a tight knit group of people who all have the same common goal. That’s why we don’t trust anyone nor talk about this outside, like we’re doing now. They approach a broken down building. Eric stands lookout as they sneak inside. IIA.A.1. (10/19/13) INT. LOOKS LIKE WAR TORN RUN-DOWN BUNKER. Brent and Eric enter. Lucy is seen nearby unloading goods from several stacked bags and boxes. They walk over to her, putting their bags on a nearby table. ERIC Hey. LUCY Hey guys. She looks at their supplies. I see you came up a bit short. Did the lines have a shortage? ERIC No. Brent here decided to give some of our rations away. Lucy starts to say something, but is immediately cut off. BRENT A lady was mugged for her rations right in front of us. She had nothing. As you can see here, we have plenty. Looking at what Lucy brought back. I see you fared well. LUCY Yea. We apparently have a lot to barter with. I’m going back tomorrow for more. It seems people up top are running low on a lot of necessities, but have a lot to offer for us, so I don’t mind. ERIC If you want the company when you go out tomorrow, let me know; I’ll go with you. LUCY I appreciate that Eric, thank you. I would appreciate the company. I don’t like strangers following me here. My biggest fear is that they will turn us in. The last thing we need is for the wrong people to find us. We’ve been doing so well staying out of sight, and I would like to keep it that way. ERIC Yea. What’s the deal with that anyway? You seem uber paranoid. II.A.A.2. (10/19/13) LUCY Because I’m scared. ERIC Of what? LUCY The law...if you want to call it that. ERIC What do you mean? LUCY I was 15 when the war broke out. I lived in a rural area of Kentucky. My family was far away from any direct impact of the invasion. My daddy was a farmer. When the invaders came to our home, they demanded us use our farm to feed their army. When my father refused, my entire family was lined up and executed; one right after another. I was the last in line so I got to watch my family get murdered. When they shot me, I felt the burn of the bullet hole, the smell of gunpowder, and the taste of blood. I was in shock and too scared to move, so I laid there lifeless as they ransacked my family’s home. Eventually I passed out. I don’t know how long I was unconscious for, but when I woke up, I was in a makeshift hospital. When I tried to make sense of what happened, I was told that a small group of passerby’s found me and brought me to them. It was a long recovery. I have this scar to remind me everyday of how my family was murdered by the same bunch of savages that “protect” us. She pulls the neck of her shirt down to reveal a bullet hole scar just inches from her heart. She then turns around and shows the exit wound scar just above the center of her back. The doctors told me that had the bullet been 2 more centimeters to the right, it would have pierced my heart and stuck in my spine, more than likely instantly killing me. I can never forgive what they did to my family. I lived in a refugee camp for years; crying myself to sleep every night knowing that I was alone. Then I met Stephen. He told me that he was planning to leave the camp and I chose to go with him. I guess you could say the rest is history. BRENT I think we pretty much lost our family the same way. We were too young to remember. We were fortunate enough to not witness any violence since our mother hid us in the basement. LUCY I suppose that’s why we get along so well, us three. We both lost our families in the war and was basically brought up by someone else. You two are braver than I. You have no fear to show your face in public. As for me, I’m petrified that the same people that killed my family will recognize me and try to finish what they failed to do all those years ago. I’m scared to death every time I go out, but I do it for the better cause. I have a deep passion to return to the kind of life I once knew and I want you to experience it. I, just for once, would like to walk the streets without a fear of being found out. To walk freely without falling victim to a crime or martial punishment for something I didn’t do. Nobody deserves that. ERIC It’ll get better. One day.
