SYNOPSIS:

After making a light but foolhardy wisecrack in a crisis meeting at the boutique wedding planning business in NYC where she works, wedding planner Kelly is deemed to be 'unmotivated' and is fired during an economic downturn-related staff reduction. Upon telling her brother Mark (who is crashing with her as he reconstructs his life and psyche after a nasty divorce) she was fired, he jokingly suggests that she start a 'divorce planning' business since the divorce rate is 50%+ and climbing. Angered by his lack of sensitivity she calls her best friend Jen, an unsuccessful agent in California, and discusses her recent termination and her brother’s insensitivity. Kelly asks Jen to come visit her in NYC to cheer her up and during the visit the genesis of Kelly's new business evolves during a night of drinking. Marc, a previously successful stock broker, who has been loafing as a video game store manager and fulltime pot-head while living on Kelly's couch for the 2 years since his divorce, straightens out enough to call in a few favors, incorporating the business and providing them with seed money. In the meantime, a New York 'society girl' who was one of Kelly's former wedding clients decides to divorce from her philandering husband and, due to their prior close personal relationship, she asks Kelly for advice and help - resulting in Kelly planning a 'divorce party' for her. The event is a success and given to the exclusive client and guest list, receives great press and the business takes off. As business grows, an old college flame of Kelly's (Kristian, now a senior executive) is in town on business and sees Kelly, Mark and Jen on late night TV. He rearranges his schedule in order to meet Kelly but she is still so angered by the past that she rejects him. In an effort to win her over, he surreptitiously meets her brother Marc to explain that he has always remained in love with Kelly. He, Marc and Jen conspire to plan a party for a wealthy 'mystery client' who turns out to be Kristian, surprising Kelly and helping to eventually rekindle their relationship. In the interim, humor is focused on situational tension between Kelly & Marc (as sibling/roommates) and between Jen/Marc/Kelly (Jen always had a crush on Mark and they form a relationship as business grows, creating tension with Kelly at times). Scenes are additionally sprinkled with humorously awkward situations and conversations as the trio meet and spend time with Kelly & Marc’s divorced parents and significant others. The film culminates with Marc/Jen solidly happily together and Kelly/Kristian re-growing their relationship happily. The final scene is a humorous extension of a previously uncomfortable dinner at the mother’s house with her odd new husband as the mom and Kristian meet for the first time.
