SYNOPSIS:

Episode summaries:

1) “The Fields of Yaru” (Egypt)

Within the dark labyrinth of an archaeological dig in the Egyptian desert, Jill, a spunky Australian archaeologist, her Egyptian colleague Mez, and three workmen, Mohammed, Rashid, and Axel, open a sarcophagus. They are disappointed to discover it has already been looted and only contains a few artifacts. One of them, a papyrus roll, directs them to a clue in the tomb’s hieroglyphics, which sends Jill on an journey back in time. She is so spellbound by the experience, will she be able to find a portal back to the present and continue her adventures around the globe?

2) "The Bat Cave" (Southwest U.S.)

Jill and Mez wrap up a day’s work in the lofty cliff dwellings once inhabited by the Mimbres culture. They discuss Jill’s father, Malcolm, who disappeared years ago during one of his digs. The discovery of a “kill” pot, with a bat design and a hole in the middle, sucks Jill and Mez in and back to the past, where they meet the “Three Sisters,” representing the main foods of the Southwest: corn, beans, and squash. They have a dangerous encounter on their way back to the present, and also get a new addition to their team.

3) “The Dreaming” (Australia)

Jill finally takes a trip back to her native land. She reunites with her mother, Julia, who never wanted Jill to follow in her father’s footsteps. While on a “walkabout” in the outback with an Aboriginal guide, Jill and her team see the animals drawn in “The Dreaming” come to life and become their spirit guides into the Aborigines’ ancestral stories. Jill resolves to look into her own past and once back home, discovers her dad’s journal. The last, cryptic entry sends her to Ireland.

4) “Tara” (Ireland)

Once on the Emerald Isle, Jill makes the acquaintance of eccentric cousin Liam, who helps her discover a useful piece of information regarding how she is able to find time portals. Jill is dubious, but using this tool on the ancient standing stones dotting the sheep-filled landscape, the time travel team journeys back to a grove of trees in the 7th century, when a new religion was taking over Ireland. They witness the ceremonies of the druids, and also get a clue as to her father’s location.

5) “Mistaken Identity” (Greece)

The next stop is Greece, where Jill thinks the mystery has a strong connection with. The team descends deep into the ocean in a small diving capsule in order to discover if any traces of Atlantis remain underwater. When they resurface, they are surprised to discover not Atlantis, but another sunken city, as well as the real reason her father is missing. He is being forced to search for a mysterious object.

6) “Ball Game” (Mexico)

Unsure of where to go next, Jill remembers her dad’s fondness for the Maya culture, and the team tries their luck in Mexico. Watching an Ulama match, a dangerous ball game played by some young boys in present day Mexico, an out of bound play sends Jill and her friends back to the gigantic stone ball courts once used by the Mayas. They experience this mortal sport in its infancy, about 3500 years ago, when both men and women participated. They start to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

7) “Painted Ponies” (France)

Having made a list of destinations and time periods where Jill’s father might be, France is a logical next step. They meet up with their old friend Axel, who is a field intern there, and joins the team in their research. Our intrepid heroes go back in time twice: once to 1940, when the Lascaux cave was first discovered, by a dog, and then further back to prehistory, around 20,000 years ago, where they meet the artists who created beautiful cave paintings, as well their animal subjects. Jill gets a glimpse of her father, and he hints as to their next destination.

8) “Stone Soldiers” (China)

Our team has another riddle to solve from Malcolm’s clue. Finally, they figure out it is a famous Chinese city where all the tourists flock to view a famous terra cotta army. Jill and her companions travel back over a thousand years ago, where the stone soldiers guarding their ruler’s tomb come to life. Will the “foo dogs,” lions who guard the entrance to shrines and temples, help them discover what lies in the Emperor’s long unopened tomb?

9) “Checkmate” (Scandinavia)

The team regroups in Ireland, where after some research, Liam thinks far northern Europe is where they should look for the next piece of the puzzle. At the Viking Ship Museum, our group shoots back in time to find itself below deck on turbulent seas with a crew of burly Viking raiders circa ninth century. Needless to say, their “hosts” aren’t too happy to see them. Jill finds out more about why her father is stuck in the past.

10) “Rapa Nui” (Easter Island)

They choose their next destination after much study and a lucky guess: a tiny dot in the Pacific Ocean, hundreds of miles from any land. Easter Island, another place with a mysterious past, was one of the last stops in the Polynesian people’s settling of the Pacific Ocean. It is famous for the enormous Moai, tall volcanic-rock statues, the oldest dating from the thirteenth century. Seen again in the past, Jill’s father has time to give the team another partial clue.

11) “Hari’s Water Temple” (India)

The clue is not much help, until Mez remembers Malcolm having studied under a yogi in his youth, so they go to India. Guru Sunil Patel tells them about Indian mythology and advises them on their next “step.” He leads them to one of the most famous and deepest stepwells from the twelfth century AD, an intricate maze of stairs. Jill and her companions follow a playful monkey, Hari, down to the water, but unfortunately our friends “fall” to a new low when important parts of the puzzle are stolen from them there. Jill’s intuition says they need to return where their adventures started – Egypt!

12) “Submerged” (Egypt)

Before leaving India, Jill notices Axel reading a French graphic novel, “Mort sur le Nil.” Jill teases him about reading an old Agatha Christie story, but then thinks; who better than Agatha, one of the most famous mystery writers in the world, who accompanied her husband on all his digs, to help them? They meet a not totally surprised Agatha on an Iraq dig circa 1949. Jill briefly explains their desperate situation. Agatha is stumped for a few seconds, but figures out the riddle. She tells them where they need to go to solve the final piece of the puzzle, and free Jill’s father.
