SYNOPSIS:
Theme: Even the most eccentric is capable of love. Two combatants brawl inside a four sided ring. The floor of this ring is as hard as cement. ,Although there is padding, the corners posts are solid steel, so contrary to popular belief people do get hurt…badly. Welcome to the world of professional wrestling: a business as corrupt as politics, where anything and everything can happen. In the last century, wrestling has grown from a side show freak show, to one of the world’s most popular pastimes. It is wild, violent, and unlike any other form of entertainment. So, what type of people watch this mayhem? “Marks“. Meet SHAWN .a young man who is neither normal in everyday life nor inside the world of wrestling fans. .He is what wrestling fans call a “Smark”: a fan who knows the inner workings of wrestling. His father was a wrestler killed in the ring, so he has flashbacks when he has trained to wrestle. Since his father’s untimely death while performing in a wrestling match and his mother’s remarriage, Shawn has been alone, with the exception of his long-time friend and business partner José and his acquaintances in the wrestling industry. Then one day, during a big wrestling show at the Double U. W. F. (Ultimate Ugly Wresting Federation), Shawn sees…HER: MONIQUE! The rest of the crowd disappears. This beauty has captured Shawn’s heart. He has fallen in love at first sight--for the third time this year! Shawn and Monique accidentally meet at the concession stand, causally chatting. As she tells Shawn for her love of musicals, a Broadway show tune erupts from Shawn’s lips: a love ballad about his two loves--Monique and pro wrestling. Monique tells Shawn about a wrestling promotion that she attends regularly in Northern California. Shawn, against José ’s advice, drops everything from his life to attend just to see Monique again. He journeys through rain for over three hundred miles--hitchhiking half way after his bus breaks down. Along the way he runs into colorful characters, including a man who Shawn believes to be a serial killer (due to an announcement on the car radio that seems to describe the man). Shawn jumps out the door-- while in motion--missing the announcement that the serial killer is actually a woman. Unbeknownst to Shawn, Monique is already taken, by the Wiccan, Asian, hip-hop-loving, wrestler, DAVE. Which way will Monique’s love tilt: To Shawn, the quirky, yet sensitive, man who loves to watch others bleed, or to the very strange, weenie of a man who is in the industry she learned from her father and loves? Despite the constant annoyance of other fans who believe that it’s all “real” (especially WILBUR, a closeted gay guy who is infatuated with KILLER KYLE--José and Shawn’s straight wrestling friend) José and Shawn continue to attend wrestling shows. However, they will soon see their friendship strained when Shawn decides to become a wrestler to impress Monique. José reluctantly agrees to help but, Shawn’s lack of wrestling talent leaves José frustrated and makes him utter three words he never has before: ”I give up”. Even more conflict arises when Monique learns that José and her father, RAY have a decade-old rivalry stemming from José’s past as a Mexican Wrestler. Will this rip her and Shawn apart? Will this rip José and Shawn apart? Will Shawn succeed at his attempt to become a wrestler? And, perhaps the most important question to be answered: What the hell is “Kayfabe“? Marks answers the eternal question: Can love defeat fear?
