When a pampered Jewish American Princess moves to Japan with her adventure-loving new husband in the 1990s, she must learn to adapt to two foreign concepts: living abroad… and marriage.
SYNOPSIS:
Due to an uncertain job market, the 1990s saw a major influx of Americans flocking to take teaching opportunities in Japan. It is into this scene that LISA, a spoiled “Princess,” is thrust when she recklessly marries hunky former marine DANIEL. She’s Beverly Hills, he’s Lonely Planet — and neither are prepared for the entirely different universe of 1990s Nagoya, where Daniel has landed an appealing job at Toyota Boshoku. Lisa thinks she’s trading Rodeo Drive and palm trees for silk kimonos and cherry blossoms. Wrong! Her rude awakening begins when she is introduced to her no-frills, 1970s-era style Japanese apartment. Forget about a doorman or pick-up laundry service; there isn’t even an elevator or a clothes dryer! While Daniel struggles to fit in with a group of American misfit teachers at Boshoku, Lisa must relearn everything she thought she knew while navigating the tricky waters of being a newlywed and a modern woman in Japan’s extremely patriarchal and traditional society.
