SYNOPSIS:
Pennsylvania Dutch Country. 1894. TILLIE GETZ (12) is a farm girl with a thirst for learning. She dreams of following in the footsteps of her beloved teacher MISS MARGARET (25). But Tillie’s life is dictated by her father JACOB (35), a brutal disciplinarian who thinks his children are his property and that the Bible is the only book worth reading. Margaret thinks otherwise, and one day gives Tillie the classic novel “Ivanhoe.” This innocent act begins a six-year war between Tillie and Jacob for her independence. While Tillie struggles to study in secret, she experiences brutal hardships, a spiritual rebirth, a sexual awakening and a public shunning, ultimately leading to a violent showdown with Jacob from which she emerges the victor. Taking control of her destiny at last, Tillie leaves her small town as a liberated, educated young woman poised to take on the world.
