13 year old engaging Peter, coached by his dad Ivan Trotsky, is a promising world beater runner. Professional coach Glen cautions against pushing Peter too hard but is ignored. Ivan is a drunken bully to his wife, Nora. Ivan is threatened with a jail term by the magistrate.

Peter is seriously wounded by a hit and run car. The driver has to pay compensation of half a million dollars. Will Peter ever walk again? His pal Jimmy 12,cheers him up in hospital. Glen, already fond of Peter, visits him. Out of hospital, Peter passes the time with his trumpet. The doctor sees some improvement. He suggests swimming. Jimmy’s a champion. Peter works religiously on his exercises. Gavin, 16, harasses Peter in the pool. Jimmy sees him off. Gavin overhears the boys discussing the coming reward.

Nora is suspicious of Peter and Jimmy’s harmless relationship. They swim daily. Jimmy gives Peter a beautiful leather belt. Peter’s compensation arrives. Gavin and his mate Fixer kidnap Peter and hide him in a deserted house. They phone Nora claiming the compensation money for his return. Glen, P.C. Perkins and Jimmy search the streets for clues. None. Gavin and Fixer arrange with Nora for the money tobe dropped in a football crowd. She makes fake money They kidnap Jimmy. Gavin collects the money. He often warns off Fixer from hurting the boys. The boys exercise daily.

The boys attack Gavin and Peter escapes to the street. Jimmy remains locked in the house. Gavin catches Peter and returns them both to the cellar. Glen finds Peter’s belt. Jimmy’s mum recognizes the belt at a family conference including Ivan, P.C. Perkins. The police arrive at the old house seconds after Gavin and Fixer have whisked the boys away. They dump them out of town. They free themselves and jog back to town. The boys recognize Gavin’s voice while swimming. Gavin and Fixer hide in Ivan’s flat. He has organized the kidnapping. Peter and Jimmy track Gavin to Ivan’s flat and repossess most of the money in the flat.

Peter is back running and entered for the big race. He wins to everyone’s delight. Glen has trained a winner, who should go far.
