SYNOPSIS:

In a remote mining town, a young boy named Francis O’Connor is in the premier league final of his imagination. The opposition are converging on him, he’s bleeding and bruised, it’s been a war and there’s one second left on the clock. He runs up the midfield and kicks; the ball screams through the air as the whistle is blown, the crowd crane their necks to watch, and, he puts it into the back of the net! He; Francis O’Connor, has won the game!

That dream was fifteen years ago and back then it seemed so possible. Now at 23, Francis walks away from the latest draft pick having failed to make a team again. He’s a talented footballer, but ever since he was a kid he has never been able to kick under pressure.

Francis heads back to his hometown of Longhorn with his tail between his legs and his dream in ruins. There isn’t much to go back to. The mines are drying up and those who were smart got out years ago. Like his best friend Simone, intelligent and hard working she went to university, got a degree in marketing then left to work in Europe. Lefty was drafted to the Redbacks, and his other mates are leaving for work in Western Australia.

Then Francis has an idea. He will form his own league. They may not be professional players, but they can have a structured system and play other mining towns. With his mates, Snowy, Big Mac and Gummy, Francis sets out to raise sponsorship to make it happen. The idea is knocked down everywhere he goes. But his efforts haven’t gone unnoticed and his best friend Simone has spotted an angle that not only will deliver Francis, something close to a taste of his dream, but also generate massive publicity for a charity she has been struggling to get people to notice in a world of constant noise.

Everything aligns and now a group of miners from a remote town on the brink of collapse, will get a once in a lifetime chance to play the reigning champions on the world stage of the MCG, the dream Francis has held onto since the days beneath the old Hills hoist is about to come true.

But there is still the problem of him kicking under pressure. Can Francis finally conquer his demons and perform when he is most needed?
