THE WHITE WITCH OF ROSE HALL
By Shaunia McKenzie

GENRE: Historical, Thriller
LOGLINE:

A woman marries the owner of a large sugar plantation in 19th century Jamaica; she begins a reign of terror that threatens to destroy the entire estate, and reveal secrets long buried.

SYNOPSIS:

Based on folklore and historical events in 19th century Jamaica, a beautiful young woman ANNIE PALMER inherits Rose Hall Plantation after the mysterious passing of her late husband Master JOHN PALMER. As Annie sets out to be the mistress of such an estate, she is being guided by her seemingly well meaning black Haitian childhood nursemaid, ANGELIQUE. Angelique educates Annie in the art of black magic/Voodoo, while keeping a tight leash on Annie's movements. Annie begins to show signs of resentment because of the part Angelique plays in the death of her forbidden slave boy lover, JACK.

Annie's rebellion against Angelique grows after the visit of a new friend, EMMA PADDINGTON who introduces Annie to opium. Emma taunts Annie about Angelique's control over her life, which spurs a drug induced Annie to rid herself of the unwanted influence of Angelique. She then proceeds to rule the plantation with an iron fist. She reigns with cruelty, the powers of black magic illusions and acts freely upon her lust for slave men.

Annie’s developed psychopathic greed for power and blood lust leads Rose Hall’s slaves on a journey of mystery and terror. As she goes through countless slave lovers and two more husbands, whom she always rids herself of, the slaves tire of living in constant fear and plan an uprising under the leadership of the enigmatic Maroon (freed slave), TACKO. Tacko manipulates Annie's weakness for slave men to seduce her and gain her confidence. Annie lets her guard down around Tacko and he in turn carries out his plot against her to rid Rose Hall plantation of the White Witch, hopefully for good.
