SYNOPSIS:
When Michael Charon is released from prison. He goes home to find that, years ago, his mother has died after being raped. Though he has just been freed, Michael has metaphorically transferred prisons. His parole officer won't let him go anywhere until he finds a job. Michael searches and searches for a job, but nobody will hire him because of his criminal background. The only one willing to hire him is a run-down, decaying movie theater which is rumored to be haunted. When a ghost nearly kills Michael, the manager finally tells Michael the secret: this place is where the dead go to be judged. They watch a film of their life, then are sent to heaven or hell via one elevator down the hall. The assistant manager is the one who decides the dead's fate. Because of Michael's criminal background, and considering his work-ethic, the manager is considering Michael for this position. This pleases his parole officer. The first person Michael must judge is a teenager convicted of murder, who died in prison. Michael does very, very well. The second is the man who murdered his mother. This man is old, meek and kind now, but Michael can't get past the murder. He sends him to hell, which infuriates the manager! The man does not deserve hell because he has atoned for his past sins. If Michael messes up one more time, he will be fired. If not, he will be promoted. When Michael visits his parole officer, he reminds Michael that if he is fired, he will return to prison... for life. That night, the manager dies. Michael returns to the theater ready to judge the last person before he is fired/promoted... his mentor, the manager. They go into the theater and watch the film, and Michael makes his decision. They go to the elevator and Michael sends him to the proper place. He is promoted immediately. His mother comes in and says good-bye, and his parole officer congratulates him. Michael is now a free man.
