SHORT SUMMARY In 1985, Aloysha Ogurtsov, the son of the communist leader of a remote Soviet village, is unjustly accused of anti-soviet activities. Imprisoned in a Gulag, he escapes and falls into the hands of a band of mafia. Their leader, Belitrov, has heard rumors the village has Nazi diamonds that was abandoned in the retreat. The mafia force Aloysha to lead them to the settlement. A battle between the mafia and the isolated townspeople ensues. Once in control of the village, Belitrov methodically looks to execute the captured villagers in the hope that they will reveal the whereabouts of the treasure; but some of the settlers, including Aloysha’s sister, Galina, and her fiancé, Slavik, manage to escape into the jungle. When Belitrov discovers that a large statue of Lenin is made of the Nazi gold, he and his crew drag it to the river. While they are loading it onto the barge, Aloysha, Slavik, Galina, and other villagers ambush them, and the statue crashes through the barge and sinks into the river. Aloysha kills Belitrov and returns with Galina and Slavik to the village. BACK STORY OF NAZI GOLD Aloysha’s grandfather, a Soviet partisan, fighting with the Russian army stumbles across Nazi gold in World War II. The German army while occupying Peterhof, discovered a stash of unknown Tsarist gold. While being removed in the Nazi retreat, the truck stalls, the German soldiers run and Aloysha’s grandfather arrives. He brings the gold to the nearest village, Kodavere Estonia. The Soviet army rolls through following the retreating Germans. In the fog of war, the war passes them. After a great debate, Aloysha’s grandfather, a bell maker by profession, melts the gold into a statue of Lenin and paints it. The villagers in Kodavere who have lost almost all their sons, are half starved, and have had most of the buildings destroyed, all agree to keep the secret. They agree if the village has this wealth it will be a protection against this from every happening again. And they do keep silent, many are in old age and near death. Aloysha’s grandfather is the last to survive and tells his son. Aloysha’s father is the only one who knows were the gold is. Unknown to Aloysha’s grandfather, Aloysha’s grandmother discovered and hides a box of Nazi diamonds. ENTIRE PLOT Following the credits, the viewers will see a 1980s soviet village of Kodavere. It is the only village in the U.S.S.R. with a statue of Lenin. People ask about the statue and Aloysha’s grandfather is given the credit and it is said he was a fervent communist. By 1980 the secret of the Nazi gold has been forgotten. It is said the statue is made of metal melted out of a German tank. Exchanging samizdat materials, Maggie and Jonathan are interrupted by several men from the government, including Aloysha’s father, Jason. Maggie bolts and tries to cross the river, but is drowned. For anti-soviet activities and also for cavorting with the wife of one of the policemen, Aloysha is condemned to fifteen years hard labor in prison. It is a virtual death sentence, we learn. Seeking fair treatment for her son, Aloysha’s mother tries to bribe the guards with some of the diamonds. And after this the villages secret is exposed. Once the mafia knows someone in the Kodavere has a treasure, there will be no peace. At the mercy of sadistic guards, Aloysha escapes through the forest and pretends to die by gunshot. He is picked up by a band of mafia, who take Aloysha to see their boss, Belitrov. Belitrov is essentially a pirate on Lake Peipus. He operates an official river barge that hauls timber, but he is actually a movable criminal gang on the lake. Belitrov promises to take Aloysha to his protection. In exchange, Belitrov and his men claim to only desire a remote safe haven in which to hide out from the government. Of course, Belitrov is untrustworthy. The second they get to the outskirts of the Kodavere, Belitrov cuts the phone lines to the village. Two gang members try to steal two women and murder the husband/father of the two women. Of crouse Belitrov is under the impression that the town is hiding a vast fortune in diamonds and doesn’t really care what his gang does to the townspeople. When Aloysha’s father is tortured and about to be killed his mother almost hands over the diamonds. But one of the young men in the village takes a shot at Belitrov and the bullet strikes the statue of Lenin. The gold is revealed to Belitrov. Belitrov has his men place the statue on the top of a car, seriously damaging it. It’s up to Jonathan and the village to wage a guerrilla style war against the criminal gang. Once the mafia begins to make their way back to their barge, the movie starts to resemble a Western, with the retreating mafia subbing for the beleaguered cavalry as the villagers guerrilla fighters take the place of harrying Indians. Soon, the mafia gang is picked off one by one via a running battle with the villagers. While loading the statue onto the barge it falls through the deck and through the hull. The boat sinks and the militia arrives to arrest the gang members.
