When his former fiancée is kidnapped in the Congo, a desperate human rights lawyer enlists the help of a child soldier to rescue her. (Based on The Cobal Curse novel.)
SYNOPSIS:
American professor KAI BALDWIN—the Indiana Jones of human rights—lives with the haunting memory of choosing to save his fiancée’s life over his father’s. After surviving a plane crash in the Congo leads to a broken wedding engagement with epidemiologist DR. BROOKE RYAN, Kai settles for a safe teaching job, vowing never to return to his childhood home in the Congo. In Southern Congo, DANTE INFERNO, an eleven-year-old child soldier, endures a withering attack at a cobalt mine and escapes from the infamous warlord, JEAN PAUL NKULU. Kai argues with his law partner, BRIAN JAMES, over their upcoming presentation to the SEC and Kai’s refusal to travel internationally. Kai’s conflicts increase when his sister, JESS, informs him that their mother, LINDA BALDWIN, is denied an urgent clinical cancer trial. Jess urges Kai to call Brooke, who can help Linda get into the trial. Kai calls Brooke for his mom and hopes to restore their love. In the Congo, Brooke escapes an enraged mob after gathering hazardous blood samples in a village with her adopted brother, DR. FABRICE MANZA. Returning to Goma, they rescue the unconscious Dante along the road.
In Dubai, MICKEY YATES, an Australian cobalt titan, is killed in a Burj Khalifa steam room hours before a secret gathering of mineral titans hosted by technology billionaire LUCAS GOFFIN. Goffin is assembling his “Alliance” to control the world’s cobalt reserves. Goffin is aided by his loyal executive assistant, CHRISTIANE MONTREAUX, a former Brussels barmaid. Goffin orders Nkulu to kidnap Brooke. The fearful Dante witnesses the kidnapping but says nothing. Fabrice calls Kai to tell him Brooke is missing. Kai visits his father’s grave, vowing to find Brooke. After his and Brian’s disastrous SEC presentation, Kai boards the first plane to Congo.
In Switzerland, Goffin announces the worldwide distribution of the Eden phone, a free satellite phone embedded with Globe crypto powered by his AI supercomputer. Goffin’s news sends financial markets into a freefall. The Eden phone is a Trojan Horse for the Alliance to rule the world through blockchain decentralization. On social media, Goffin is lauded as the next Steve Jobs. Later, Brooke arrives with the blood samples at Goffin’s lair in Gbadolite, Mobutu’s abandoned palace, and nuclear bunker—now a high-tech mission control. Forced to work with Chinese scientists, Brooke discovers a horrific new virus. Goffin orders her to weaponize his drones with the virus to surveil the world’s cities and cripple satellite networks. When Brooke refuses, Goffin reveals Jess and her two children have been taken hostage.
On a Brussels layover, masked thugs throw Kai into a Goffin Industries van at gunpoint. A fight ensues. Kai kills his captors and after receiving a series of mysterious texts, he later asks Brian to investigate Goffin Industries by traveling to St. Kitts and Nevis to learn more. In Goma, Kai and Fabrice meet with UN Force Commander XAVIER DUPONT. Dupont expresses his sympathy for Brooke but warns of an imminent volcanic eruption of Mt. Nyiragongo. Kai suffers a devastating blow when he learns Dupont and Brooke are engaged. The painful news triggers the memory of the airplane crash and his fateful choice to save Brooke over his father. In a seedy bar, Dupont scolds Nkulu for murdering his UN troops. Nkulu mocks Dupont for his hypocrisy of deceiving Brooke. Earthquakes rock the Eastern Congo as Dante volunteers to lead Kai and Fabrice through a dangerous rainforest to Nkulu’s jungle camp in search of Brooke. Frustrated by their fruitless search, Kai calls Brian, who reveals a mole inside the Alliance has exposed Brooke’s secret location.
On the trek back to Goma, an old woman healer confronts Kai, exposing his toxic grief and fear. He steels himself for the final assault on Gbadolite—the three race back to Goma to secure Dupont’s help. Mt. Nyiragongo erupts, sending the city into a panic. In Gbadolite, Goffin’s countdown launch clock is set. Christiane betrays Goffin by telling Brooke he used a deep fake for Jess and the kids. Kai, Fabrice, and Dante discover Nkulu holding Dupont hostage in Goma. Nkulu reveals Dupont’s betrayal of Brooke. Dante kills Nkulu but begs for Kai’s forgiveness after revealing he was with Nkulu when Kai’s father’s plane was shot down. Dupont flies Kai, Fabrice, Dante, and soldiers in UN helicopters to Gbadolite to rescue Brooke and flood the bunker with explosives. Kai’s team takes heavy losses as Fabrice leads the injured soldiers out. Christiane is caught and sacrifices her life to help Brooke escape Goffin. The bunker floods. Kai squares off against Goffin, who holds Brooke. A vicious fight ensues. Brooke stabs Goffin with a floating syringe. Kai throws Goffin into the raging waters. The two are trapped in a flooded elevator as the water rises. Kai holds a railing, telling Brooke to stand on his back. He kisses her goodbye and descends underwater. Dante hears Brooke’s pounding. Fabrice pries open the elevator and revives the unconscious Kai. In the final scene, Kai marries Brooke, surrounded by family and friends at their home on the shores of Lake Mweru.

In a recent webinar, that industry professional said don't use "must" because it presents your protagonist as passive. Just take it out & adjust to "rescues" was her suggestion. Also, should CDC be clarified in a logline? I want hold 100% to that one. :) Definitely sounds intriguing.

Sounds cool. Like the character Ralph Fiennes played in The Constant Gardener versus Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood. Who wouldn't want to see that. Best of luck Joey O'Connor

Really intriguing story, Joey O'Connor. I agree with Cara Rogers about not using "must" in the logline. Maybe change "must" to "attempts to" (or something else more active than "must").
