SYNOPSIS:
Once upon a time, moving into residence was a simple rite of passage for first year university students, a time filled with the hope of fresh starts and a new life. But not for Alice Turner. Alice comes to Farraway University, British Columbia, ready to start afresh. However, entering into this bright new world precipitates sudden panic attacks that manifest in vivid hallucinations. Feeling anxiety over moving away, suddenly being left by her loving step mother, trying to bond with a reclusive roommate and having to face the frenzy of frosh week (complete with a choreographed residence dance off), Alice begins to see visions of herself in a red hood with a monstrous beast chasing her in an unknown forest. Alice begins to question her hold on reality. Do these visions come from within or without? Eventually, Alice and her friends learn that her hallucinations may be real after all. Farraway is a story of four unlikely friends who are forced to deal with two new worlds: the recognizable trials of college life, and a supernatural realm of demons with human faces. Together they try to overcome the fears that are holding them back on their journey into adulthood and self-discovery. Alice is joined by Derek, an energetic jokester with a big heart, insecure about who he really is; conscientious Kira, who has been governed by her overbearing parents her whole life; and Koleman, a down to earth athlete, who’s running from his family’s past. Fairy tales are no longer about the happy endings. They’re about the lessons they teach, and how we can use them for our survival. Farraway doesn’t promise that everyone lives happily ever after; instead, these characters are fighting for any chance of an after.
