SYNOPSIS

"The Rosary" is the adaptation of a story I wrote some years ago, that was published into the short story collection "Oltre l@rete" in Italy. ù

“The Rosary” is not a story about prayers.

It’s Clara’s story. She arrives on the day of her uncle's funeral, at her Aunt Maria’s house, to help with the many condolences visits, for Uncle Gianni, Maria’s husband, died the day before. But Clara gets caught into the frantic research for a rosary to put in the hands of Uncle Gianni (he has nothing in his hands and it's the tradition in Italy to put a sign of the Catholic faith into the hands of a dead person), by Maria’s old English friend Wendy, because the parish priest is coming soon and he'll notice the lack of any faith sign. Wendy has a beautiful rosary at home, she wants to get it and give it to Maria. The research soon becomes an amusing journey for Clara (dispite of herself), from Aunt Maria’s apartment to Wendy’s apartment in the same building, next to the whismical and eccentric old lady. Wendy speaks broken Italian, and she has a starting dementia. During the little journey she tells Clara she married her Italian husband, she was very much in love, had a son who now lives in Australia, and has two wondeful grandchildren. Wendy finds the rosary and the two women bring it back to Aunt Maria just in time for the arrival of the priest. When Clara tells her aunt about Wendy's son, she discovers that Wendy lost her son years before in a car accident, and that he didn't have neither a wife, nor kids. The priest arrives and there is a little moment of prayers, then the priest goes away. The women sit in the living room and Aunt Maria is very sad, she cries and she says that she doesn't know how to live without her husband. Then Wendy tells her "forget".
