Tori Evans’ life has reached a breaking point: her husband has filed for divorce and left her to raise their daughter, Nicki, alone. In Tori’s darkest hour, she loses her job as a reporter for The San Francisco Chronicle. Tori gets a chance at redemption when she is summoned to San Quentin’s Death Row to interview serial killer Reynaldo Ramirez days before he is to be executed.

While initially dismissive of Ramirez's request to memorialize his killing spree, Tori soon discovers that she cannot decline when she learns that Ramirez has had Nicki kidnapped. If daily stories of his murderous exploits fail to appear in the paper, she dies. Tori struggles against the clock to uncover clues about her daughter’s whereabouts embedded within every interview with Ramirez. In a race against time, Tori tries desperately to comprehend the secrets which will reunite her with her daughter before the execution of Ramirez.
