Swept Away is a story of an unlikely friendship between an ever-hopeful island-boy and a jaded dive instructor; both who have lost their loved ones in a tsunami. Through a chance encounter, they begin the insurmountable task of scouring every square inch of the sea to bring home the bodies of their loved ones. The story explores the question: how far do we go in the name of love?

LUIS (23, male), a carefree island-boy is madly in love with ADRIANA (23, female), who is set to marry her obnoxiously rich fiancé. One night, during their regular secret rendezvous, Luis makes 100 paper cranes and makes a wish – that they will elope in 3 days’ time and leave Puerto Rico.

At the same time, NICOLE (45, female), an American dive instructor is closing down her dive resort. Her husband has left her and there is no more reason to stay in Puerto Rico. She will leave for America together with her deaf and mute daughter MAY (7, female) in 3 days.

On that fateful day, when Luis and Adriana are to elope, and when Nicole and May are to leave the island for America, a tsunami sweeps the island. Both Adriana and May are swept away and disappear under the waves; their bodies never found since.

Six months later, the island is slowly rebuilding. Both Luis and Nicole have searched everywhere they can. Luis wants a proper burial so that Adriana’s soul can go peacefully to the next world. Nicole wants to say a final goodbye to May and desperately needs closure. But, to their utter frustration, the government has ended the underwater search.

Through a chance encounter, Luis and Nicole meet and immediately bond. Luis has a crazy idea – that she teaches him diving, and that they both begin to search in the ocean. Nicole says no, but after seeing Luis’ determination, she agrees. But with one condition – that they give themselves 100 dives, and if they find nothing, they will end the search. SEBASTIAN (40, male), the assistant dive master, ridicules this idea and is determined to frustrate Luis’ efforts, in order to not give Nicole false hope.

Thus, begins their epic search in the sea. Each day, they take the boat out into the sea and begin diving. Luis makes 100 paper cranes, where he throws one into the sea during each search to summon Adriana’s soul to the surface. Meanwhile, he has been consulting LAYLA, a medium who promises him that she can find Adriana’s body through her incantations. Little does Luis know, Layla is nothing but a scam artist.

As the search progresses towards 100 dives, Luis is frustrated that Nicole is giving up; Nicole is frustrated that Luis is so naïve. On the last dive, their frustration culminates into an epic fight – and the search ends. Nicole will now proceed with her plan to go back to America.

But as fate would have it, good news comes: May has been found on the other side of the island and she is still alive! Encouraged by this miracle, Nicole decides to stay on and help Luis with his search. The entire island is energized by this wonderful news. Thus, begins the biggest underwater search ever seen in Puerto Rico that will bring home bodies that have been swept away into the ocean.
