SYNOPSIS:
That Miami Magic revolves around the uncertain love life of a twenty something Runaway Latina Honeymooner, in her attempts to leave what she considers a loveless, parent pressured new marriage, to pursue her first and true love an African-American aspiring Hip-Hop and Latin Music Mogul; and return to the multi-racial college educated cast of close friends; who often appear as a small United Nations gone wrong, as they engage in the traditional taboos of interracial dating, and relationships; all against the backdrops of ethnicity, class, culture, sexuality, marriage, Latin and Hip Hop music, as well as, professional soccer in the diverse and Caliente “Latin Capital of the Americas” - Miami. The Primary Characters: Johanna Cruz – mid-20’s, first generation born American, Miami native and dutiful daughter to her blue collar parents Luis and Sonja they gave their blessings to her marriage to Ramon, a Professional Soccer Player in Los Angeles. Instead of visiting them with their future grandchildren (as they had hoped) she returns home alone during what should be an enjoyable Honeymoon, telling them that the new marriage has been dissolved. She is now starting fresh with a continued employment search and hopefully restarting a relationship with a dubious Tyson Williams (an African-American Fellow College Attendee and Grad), her first love. This is far from being the only story of love and romance across racial, cultural, and class lines… especially here in Miami. Ramon Cortez – early 30’s (Johanna’s New Husband) is a Very Handsome transplanted Angelino of Spanish Decent, and a traditional Latin Gentleman who believes the Man should lead and the Woman should follow. He grew up playing Soccer in his native country, then coming to Los Angeles as an aspiring Soccer Star with the dream of becoming a professional player there. When he met Johanna on a team trip to Miami, he knew this would be the ideal wife for him. Now his whole World has suddenly fallen apart during their Caribbean Honeymoon. However, Ramon is not going away that easily as he specifically follows her to Miami as a Star Player and part of an Advance Team to the new Major League Soccer Franchise (The Miami Majix) in hopes of relocating there and to persuade her to give them another chance. He is determined not to let his Dream of having a wonderfully traditional Latino Family, die a sudden and unnecessary death. Luis Cruz – late 40’s (Johanna’s father) of Dominican Republic heritage, head of the tightly knit family and very much the Latin traditionalist. He speaks with an accent and has an 8th grade education, working 14 to16 hour days with his struggling gardening business. He is a true Professional Soccer Aficionado. And feels honored his Daughter has married a Latino Professional Soccer Player. As a loving Father, he is very disappointed with the immediate failure of Johanna’s new marriage (having really liked and Bonded with his new Son-in-Law). Sonja Cruz - mid 40’s (Johanna’s mother), Puerto Rican by birth, a high school graduate is less of a traditionalist than Luis and wants Johanna (as well as, her brother Jorge) to be happy. She works out of their home as a Seamstress, making clothes to order for wealthy women in Miami. After years of cooking and eating traditional Latin Cuisine and physical inactivity, it has begun to toll on her overall health. All unbeknownst to her immediate family. Jorge Cruz – mid 20’s (Johanna’s brother) is a struggling Latin Music Singer, living on the edge and running with a less than stellar crowd. Much to his Family’s dismay. He is a Momma’s Boy and harbors a dark secret only known to Johanna. Tyson Williams – mid 20’s, is African-American, and a serial womanizer who lives in an affluent section of Miami. He is Johanna’s first love. Tyson has postponed law school to pursue his dream of being a Hip-Hop Music & Latin Music Producer, starting his own music label SoBe/MIA Music. After all, Miami is a hot spot for this particularly popular genre of today’s music. He was devastated when Johanna left him for her future Husband. Though he still loves her, the lack of trust does not allow him to wholeheartedly take Johanna back. Richard Williams – mid 50’s (an Attorney) Tyson’s Father worked his way through College and Law School, and ultimately started his own prominent Miami Law Firm. He is a first generation College graduate; having attended Miami’s only Historically Black Florida Memorial University and is fiercely proud of his Son, Tyson who also went there. But also he is very disappointed Tyson did not go directly into Law School right out of College, Graduate and then join the Family Firm. Georgia Williams – mid 50’s, (an Attorney) is also an Attorney and comes from a prominent Atlanta Family. She met Richard at Florida Memorial University, where they dated and ultimately married after graduating. They also attended Law School together. Practicing in the Family Firm, she also serves as a City Councilwoman in Miami’s Solidly Middle Class African-American Suburban City of Miami Gardens. It is an understatement that she loves her Son Tyson. But much like her Husband, she is very concerned about the professional and personal choices he has made. And vows to change all this for the better. Tyson’s Mom is a World Class Snob who arranges a lunch date with Johanna’s Mom (Sonja Cruz), to let her know that she feels Johanna is not good enough for her Son. The Lunch does not go well. The Secondary Characters: Raj Dharmandra – mid 20’s, (a Cool Computer Geek) is a 2nd generation Indian-American, who is a Yale Graduate and returned to Miami to start up a tech support business. His Father being from humble beginnings, got the opportunity to come to America on an IBM Executive Exchange Program. The Father decided that returning home to India to engage in a traditionally arranged marriage, was best. As Parents, they have the same plans for Raj. But he only has eyes for a young African-American woman (Ashley), from the wrong side of the tracks. He ultimately feels what his parents don’t know, won’t hurt them. Ashley Johnson – mid 20’s attractive African-American Young Lady from a single parent low to middle income family, living with her mother. She is the second in her family ever to go and graduate from college. Her neighborhood is wrought with unemployment, drugs, even drive by shootings, and homelessness. Her friendship with Johanna and involvement with Raj, give her a reprieve from the life she grew up and lives in. She works with Miami Luxury Homes, and was hired after also graduating from Florida Memorial University. Johnny Fowler – mid 20’s, a Caucasian cut up and transplant from Wisconsin (who never really fit in, back home). He comes from a wealthy family, as both of his parents are successful physicians). A jock who couldn’t find a job upon graduating, he now works as an A&R Executive for Hip-Hop Music at the SoBe/MIA Music Label. This is primarily so he can be close to beautiful women of Miami (all women are his “Kryptonite”). Melanie Ramamurthy – mid 20’s, is a very attractive but racially ambiguous Indian-American woman coming from a very accomplished family of Entrepreneurs living in an affluent suburb of Miami. Her parents (though not holding to the tradition of arranged marriages) would still like for her to marry an Indian man. Raj is a prospect in her mind, but for right now she is dating a very attractive and less accomplished Latino man (Miguel) whom she is certain her parents would not approve of. Miguel Verona – late 20’s, Latino and Melanie’s “Squeeze”. They met at a South Beach Night Club. He is the A&R Executive for Latin Music at the SoBe/MIA Music Label (and a part time Miami-Dade College student). His Parents own a Local Miami Barrio Corner Market, which he helps out at when he can. He wants much more out of life, but right now he’s just into having a good time. Jade Tanaka – mid 20’s, Japanese American and current lover to Johnny. Her family started a landscaping business after moving to Miami from California, where her grandparents were placed in internment camps during World War II. Like Melanie, she also works at Miami Luxury Homes and met Johnny at the same South Beach Night Club. She still lives with her parents, who have instilled in her the belief that in Japanese Culture “Good Girls” do not leave home until they are married. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED: WGA Registered 1661159
