Things go awry when Phil, a ward of the state and heir to contested millions, must prove his sanity to gain his freedom by curing a fellow inmate of her delusions.

Phil Distella has inherited millions from his grandfather's estate but finds himself in a mental institution with Michelle, a mysterious woman who believes she is holding the stars in the sky. Michelle believes she is dying and must pass on the secret to a successor before her death, but no one is worthy.

Phil's family has had him committed temporarily while they contest his grandfather's will in court. Phil's best friend Bill, an attorney, fights to have him released but must find a suitable way to prove his sanity. The judge in the case is an old friend of the family and sympathetic to Phil's plight. He is willing to accept a demonstration of sanity if one can be found. Phil convinces Bill that he can cure Michelle of her delusion by getting close to her over a period of time and allowing her to teach him her secret. He hopes to cure her as a means to his own freedom.

However, reality shifts for Phil when he slowly falls in love with this beautiful soul who is desperate to teach her secret to a worthy successor before death can take her away. Things are further complicated when the earth enters the tail of a comet at precisely the moment Phil is tested by Michelle resulting in a once in a lifetime massive meteor shower and the stars falling from the sky. In the meantime the corrupt family members have hired an actress to infiltrate the asylum and drug Phil with hallucinogens causing him to actually believe in Michelle's delusion.

Ultimately Phil is transformed, through his love for Michelle, from a sarcastic, confused, and weary man to a calm soul in charge of his life and helping others.
