THE SUNGLASSES (SHORT)

LOGLINE:

A door-to-door salesman, suffering from hemeralopia, schemes up a plan to catch the thief who stole his most precious personal possession - a pair of sunglasses.

SYNOPSIS:

During the 2008-2009 economic recession, Gary Summers, a door-to-door salesman struggles to sell bundled internet, phone and TV service to make ends meet. After a long day of unproductive door-to-door sales pitch in a rich neighborhood, Gary drives home and almost slams his car into a tree when bright sunlight glares in his face. He visits an eye doctor and is told he has hemeralopia, a rare eye condition which hinders the sufferer's the ability to see in bright sunlight. Gary saves every penny he can and buys an expensive prescription sunglasses to enable him to work. But one morning, he discovers that a bum had broke into his car and stole the precious sunglasses he left in the car. Now, Gary is determined to catch and punish the thief in the most brutal way he can imagine.

This would be a great logline for a comedy if the guy wasn't suffering from hemeralopia. As a crime thriller, it might need some work. The bombshell of 'a pair of sunglasses' comes across a bit like a punchline.

I had no idea what hemeralopia was until I read this, so hearing that a guy went out to exact vengeance on someone just for having his sunglasses stolen made me smile thinking it sounded funny, like an absurd cat-and-mouse chase movie. Then I read the synopsis and felt guilty lol.
