A backdrop of the spirit of rock and roll underscores one comically guilt-ridden teenage girl's over-the-top battle to save her quirky town from man-made monster plants, while sorting out her love triangle angst.

SYNOPSIS:

I’ve written a fun horror musical send-up called “East Side Girl.” It mixes those late 50s monsters b-movies with early 60s teen coming of age musicals. I am a former HBO Sports journalist, where I earned an Emmy Award for my contributions to Inside the NFL.

“East Side Girl” with its genre-bending elements and memorable characters, is a modern day “Hairspray” mixed with “Little Shop of Horrors.” At its core, it’s an irreverent, but grounded, coming-of-age girl power story. 1962. Harmony, New Hampshire. JOANN SPRINGER, a nerdy teenager, is comically stuck - obsessively guilt-ridden over the death of her botanist mom. The reclusive teen reluctantly switches schools in a Hail Mary hope of moving on. To her surprise, she quickly attracts two love interests: CHAD, an academically driven fellow geek and DEKE, a gang leader who shares the pain of a missing mother. Tempted by the twin romances, she slowly creeps out of her self-imposed shell. To top that off, she catches the attention of DOCTOR PERKINS, a brilliant teacher-mentor. Things are looking better than the insecure Joann could ever imagine …

UNTIL …

Joann discovers this so-called teacher-mentor altering her deceased mom’s experiments to create Human Plant Ghouls. More frightening than first love, Joann now faces a Living Green Hell. This betrayal is the last straw. In memory of her mom and empowered with newfound confidence from her adventures, she vows to stop the monsters and save the townies. Joann grows from guilt driven isolation to inspiring leader. She learns the Ghouls are rallying at the football stadium for the final showdown. Now, with the lives of all of Harmony hanging in the balance, Joann must hatch a desperate plan, thwart the Plant Ghouls, lead the locals to safety or lose all that matters to her. Don’t ever underestimate an East Side Girl …and it happens in song.
