GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

After the sudden death of her mother, a down and out drag queen travels from New York to Iowa to find her estranged father and break the news to him.

SYNOPSIS:

Drunk, apathetic, and scarred from the jagged edges of her broken dreams, drag queen Stella Daze works in a dilapidated New York dive bar, owned by her callous ex, where she makes just enough money to feed her crippling addiction.

While sleeping off yet another hangover, Stella gets a phone call; her mother has died. The news sends Stella reeling, but her grief is soon replaced by dread as she realizes that someone will have to tell her estranged, abusive father about the untimely death. Stella initially resists, but begrudgingly tracks her father down in Lincoln, Nebraska. Stella harangues her boss and former love interest, Ray, into driving her, and the two set out on the onerous quest. But things quickly go from bad to worse for the dysfunctional pair. A run in with the law and subsequent engine troubles leave them stuck in the middle of nowhere. Their acrimony comes to a head after Stella discovers that Ray had been cheating on her during their relationship. The two of them go their own bitter ways, and Stella soldiers on alone. A trucker named Joanna spots Stella on the side of the road and offers to give her a ride. The two have an instant spark. Stella confides her fears, and Joanna’s salt of the earth wisdom help Stella to reach an awakening. Stella feels confident in finding and confronting her father. She finishes the last leg of her trek to Lincoln solo.

Stella finally comes face to face with her father, Frank, for the first time in years only to find that he is a sick, decrepit old man in a convalescent home. Even so, Stella’s determined to finish what she started. Stella musters her courage and tells her father about the death of her mother and confronts him about the years of merciless abuse she suffered at his hands. She defiantly tells him that she owns who she is and is proud of herself. It appears that her words have fallen on deaf ears until the old man suddenly bursts to life. Frank lunges at her, but Stella easily overpowers him. What started as an attack turns into an embrace between the two. Stella returns to New York, finding herself at peace for the first time in her adult life. She finally severs all ties with Ray and walks out of his Club for the last time.
