DOG MOM
By Tamra Teig

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

When a Midwestern empty-nester's son is "outed" she leaves her empty marriage and moves with him to Hollywood for a fresh start and to pursue her lifelong dream of being an actor—but her son's rescue dog ends up with the career she's always wanted.

SYNOPSIS:

A family fish-out-of-water, coming-of-age dramedy, DOG MOM is set in near-future Los Angeles, about a mom trying to reinvent herself while her two adult kids try to find themselves—all while sharing one bathroom.

LISA OLAFSSON is a strong-spirited, ambitious woman, who’s been trapped in a Stepford Wives life, putting her aspirations on hold to be a dutiful wife, support her husband’s career, and raise her two children. As she hits the empty-nest stage, she discovers her life feels just as empty.

Her son ZACHARY is an angst-ridden, sensitive 21-year-old, but his soul is much older. The hidden scars on his arms are the only outward signs of his struggles with his sexual identity and lack of career direction. When he’s suddenly “outed,” it’s the push Lisa needs—she moves with him to Hollywood so they can both make a fresh start.

Lisa meets new neighbors, happily married couple HUGO, an environmental attorney and EMIL, a popular drag queen. They become father figures to Zach, and support system for Lisa.

Then Zach brings home a rescue dog, LARRY. The adorable pup charms everyone he meets—except Lisa.

At her first audition, Lisa meets MYRINA, an empowered black British woman, who shows Lisa how to own a room, and inspires her to take ownership of her life. Lisa won’t discover until much later how much of Myrina’s life is just another role she plays.

The pilot ends with Lisa getting cast in a national commercial--but it turns out Zach’s dog Larry is the one getting the big break. The first season is a rollercoaster, as Lisa and Zach stumble along their journeys of self-discovery and Lisa gradually transforms from an unfulfilled "soccer mom" to devoted dog mom.

Just as they seem to be getting their footing, Season One ends with another surprise hurdle between Lisa and her new solo life: her 25-year-old newlywed daughter KAYLA arrives on her doorstep. The Sporty-spice doppelgänger shows up with still-wrapped wedding gifts, all her bags, and lots of baggage. Will Lisa ever get to focus on herself and realize her own long-delayed dreams?

The series follows Lisa and her kids through breakups, breakdowns and ultimately, breakthroughs--and explores the challenges of starting over at any age, choosing another life path once you realize the one you’re on is a dead end.

DOG MOM has a fresh perspective: Midwesterners experiencing the real heart of LA beneath the veneer, with new friendships, relationship struggles, and intriguing insights into the little-known, crazy world of background acting...all based on real experiences.
