LOGLINE:

When an African-American falls in love with a local Asian and is intent on marriage, he must obtain her parent's approval.  He's forced to undergo a journey of self-discovery in order to prove his mettle and win her hand.

SYNOPSIS:

In order for MARK JACOBS, an African-American executive living in Singapore, to marry his true love REASON TAN he must meet her parents and prove his mettle in order to win her hand. They, however, are not interested in him as they see no potential future for their daughter. His character and stature are not of high calibre for their daughter. Mark thinks it's about status and money when it's actually nothing of the sort.

To prove his worth, Mark must first apply for PR status but is told that it may be rejected. He then leaves his client’s company to set up his own boutique consultancy firm. He sells his worldly possessions in the U.S. moves into a tiny apartment and enters an underground fight club in order to obtain funds to start his own boutique consultancy and prove to her parents that he's no migrant.

He's able to finally garner the funds necessary for his own business, and he poaches his old subordinates from G.D.R. for assistance to grow the business. He now submits for PR and it's approved. He meets Reason’s parents once again but they’re still unimpressed.

Mark broaches friendship with locals in an attempt to ingratiate himself and learn of the culture. But even that fails to impress his future in-laws. This puts undue strain on his relationship with Reason.

Mark in desperation reaches out to Simon an American monk at a temple in Beijing and learns that it’s not about money, or status for the parents, but more about the future well being of their daughter. He reflects on what he needs to do. He adopts a Daoist path - iChang and Wei Wei, and with his Taoist edict begins to put others before self, in his daily life and at work. This finally impresses Reason's parents and they're allowed to marry.

At the wedding Reason whispers that she's with child. Now Mark has to enter a whole new set of hurdles with his parents and adopted society with the coming birth of his child.

Tagline: There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.
