HIDDEN WITNESS
By Marie D. Jones

GENRE: Thriller, Crime
LOGLINE:

A detective teams with his old flame, a former police psychologist, to work with the only witness to a brutal murder - a homeless woman with six different personalities, none of whom are willing to cooperate.

SYNOPSIS:

A vicious sex crime. A woman’s dead body. No leads, no clues, no witnesses… until now. DETECTIVE JOHN KRIPKE, dedicated and road-worn, thinks he might finally get the big break he needs, and save his own ass in the process. But when his sole living witness turns out to be a homeless bag lady with six different personalities, Kripke’s saving grace becomes a descent into a black hole. Because not only is the bag lady unwilling to talk, but her alternate personalities are even more elusive. Kripke has nothing else to go on, and he knows one of those six personalities saw what happened.

That’s when Kripke’s boss, CAPT. WIZER, calls in the big gun, JOANNA SEGER, a former police psychologist-turned-author with a #1 best-seller and an itch to research DID, Dissociative Identity Disorder, for an upcoming book. Joanna jumps at the chance to work with a real live DID patient and maybe help her old pals at the Precinct crack the one case that’s been plaguing them. She especially likes working with her old flame, Kripke, as the sparks inevitably fly between them once they meet again.

There’s just one thing standing in her way. The witness. ODETTA THOMPKINS is homeless, African-American and mentally ill in a city with no mercy, so it’s only natural she denies everything, including her need for help, much to Kripke’s dismay. Nor does she want to have anything to do with a murder investigation, and her own possible part in finding a mad killer. She has enough to deal with just finding a safe place to sleep at night.

Joanna immediately takes a fearful and uncooperative Odetta under her wing, even hides the homeless woman out at her lavish upstate mansion. Like a fish out of water, Odetta struggles to keep herself “together” in a world of expensive clothes and furniture, as Joanna struggles to gain Odetta’s trust and convince her to help the police solve the heinous crime… before the killer strikes again.

Through a series of frightening hypnosis sessions, Joanna finally pierces Odetta’s self-imposed armor and learns the deep, dark secret that caused Odetta’s mind to shatter into distinct voices many years ago. But none of them realizes what’s in store as they continue their journey into the inner recesses of a human mind, where a “hidden witness” waits to be discovered. And there is little time to waste, for the killer lurks in their midst, far closer than any of them imagine…
