THE APARTMENT (SHORT) - UNDER OPTION

THE APARTMENT (SHORT) - UNDER OPTION
By Brandi Self

GENRE: Sci-fi, Comedy
LOGLINE:

A couple caught up in the whirlwind of technology check into their sublet only to find they can’t connect.

SYNOPSIS:

After winning a trip to the big city for filling out e-surveys, Paul and Shirley Watanabe arrive at their sublet with their heads buried in their phones, only stopping to take an unprovoked selfie with a homeless man. They are let into the lobby of the building where they search for a “red rock” that promises to provide a way in. They soon find the ancient key when it drops out of an emoji-stained red rock in a nearby plant. Inside is mysteriously old-fashioned, nothing like the on-line photos, and most importantly none of their devices connect to the internet. After shouting for Alexa and searching for a router, they discover that the TV is fake and try to leave but find themselves diverted back inside by an unknown force. Going through withdrawals, they try to connect on a human level but are distracted once again by the sweet, sickening lure of technology when one of their phones finally gets reception.

Brandi.. not sure I've seen furniture referred to as 'deceased' before, but I get it :) Interesting idea that could play over into a transmedia format too

Brandi Self

Hey Jonathan, I used the "deceased" as a bit of foreshadowing for this bizarre piece. Thanks so much for commenting!

Mark LaFever

Brandi - this reminds me of the brand-name shout-outs in AMERICAN PSYCHO or some of the anti-consumer language in FIGHT CLUB...what if one of the couple were OK with the vibe in the apartment - and the other wasn't? Could be some nice conflict there to spice things up...

Brandi Self

Mark, you definitely got the "Fight Club" references. Thanks for your comment!

Mike Gold

Brandi - this is how I feel every day! Seriously though, your command of language, challenging theme and retro style for this one are a joy to read. I can see the exhausted young couple and feel the apartment's sinister character waiting patiently. The couple's journey is is going to be entertaining, as well as the end which could go any number of surprising directions. You continue to put out an impressive collection of work, young lady.

Brandi Self

You get it, Mike! Always a pleasure to hear your thoughts.

Adrian Sanchez

This sounds great!

Lital Doron

Many people can relate to this story! On the extreme side, it reminds me of The Money Pit (1986) with Tom Hanks, only that was a super hilarious comedy. :)
