FINISHING TOUCHES
By Cristopher DeRose

GENRE: Mystery
LOGLINE:

An investigator who helps an adult film star who is receiving death threats fails, resulting in the star's death. Maybe.

SYNOPSIS:

An investigator believes an adult actress has been killed. The cause of death (handled by a coroner the investigator is unfamiliar with) is listed as “heart failure.” She is also noted as her profession being a “poet.” Investigator doesn’t get the Jim Morrison references (an idol of the actress) until the day of the funeral.

Girl committed suicide via overdose, according to her friends. As per the guidelines in her will (drafted the week of her death) she has insisted on a closed, sealed casket.

Investigator notes the girl was close to 6’ 2”. The casket is about a foot short.

There is a moment at the burial when the investigator approaches one of the girl’s “co-workers.” Her eyes widen as he gets closer, as if afraid she’s going to take her into custody or worse, demand the casket be opened.

Instead, all she says is “I’m sorry for your loss. She’s in a better place.”

The girl grins in relief, but only for a moment before she regains the appearance of a proper mourner.

“Yes,” she says.

And so it ends, with the investigator walking away, collar turned up against the cold.

In your logline, you don't want to give away crucial details such as the protagonist's failure. Perhaps try something like "When an adult film star begins receiving death threats, a private investigator must stop at nothing to protect her." We now know the primary conflict/obstacle these characters will be dealing with, and we are anxious to see how this mission goes.
