DONNA

DONNA
By Wanda Reinholdt

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

Donna Short fulfills her new husband Joe’s restaurateur dreams with a beat-up Calgary food truck only to wind up creating more chaos than she’s used to.

SYNOPSIS:

Donna Short (45), who is six feet tall, wants a world where everyone is united, and everything feels good. (Naive much?) She’s always a fish out of water - taking creative cracks at making things better she knows nothing about. But she thinks it’s all worth the risk.

Like when Donna and husband, JOE “BLACK BEAR” CHUNKO (55), prep Ukrainian food for what seems like their umpteenth event (they’ve only been doing it for a week): Joe bends over to pick up a knife and gets stuck with his rump in the air. And Donna gets a shoulder cramp as she cuts the cheese. Joe begs her to go to emergency because it hurts when he tries to stand up. But Donna says no! Alberta emergencies take too long. She knows what to do:

She blasts a disco 80’s tune on their stereo. As she bounces out of step to the music, she puts up her hair with a scrunchy and squeezes Joe’s big head into a sweat band. Then she drags a still-not-able-to- stand-up Joe out of the truck to their picnic bench. They have on matching 80’s short shorts (butt cheeks)!

With the truck mirror as her steady, Donna yells “great job” like a fitness expert. She leans over way too far for her shorts to touch her toes and comes back up to do an over-the-head arm stretch. She urges Joe to straighten his back, but a bent over Joe complains that he can’t see her let alone follow her. So, she puts her hands on his butt and positions it to face her.

Not only can Joe now see her, but Donna’s touch turns him on. He tells her he likes it. So, Donna responds with a sexy dance holding onto the mirror as if it is a dancing pole. She asks him if he likes that. When he whistles and eggs her on more, Donna jumps on the mirror. She pirouettes into a seductive pose and holds it just as their truck manager, JODY LUV (25), and staff member, KAI WANG (18), walk in, the mirror detaches from the truck, and takes Donna down with it.

Joe wonders out loud if they are cut out for this food truck thing. But Donna insists they are because “you don’t know what I went through to get this truck for you!”. She goes on to reveal the story:

Donna bombs down the 100 km/ hour (60 miles/hour) Calgary Deerfoot freeway as her veil and wedding dress flop out her doorless debacle. With one hand, Donna grabs her attire. With the other hand, she leans forward, grits her teeth, and zips as fast as her speed governed vehicle will go.

Problem is, her zip is barely 90 km (52 miles). All the other vehicles must pass her. They honk their horns, flap their mouths, and give their middle fingers. But feel-good Donna smiles and waves back like the proud winner of a Miss Universe contest.

And it works! A fancy four by four pulls up. Out bounds a short wide smiling cowboy biker named JIMMY BENZ (50). That’s when Donna sees the big glimmering neon sign, “BIKER’S AND COWBOYS DON’T BITE - MUCH!” in his window. He yells, “What seems to be the trouble, baby?” Donna shouts back, “No biting bikers or cowboys needed! I can get this food truck to the church.” Jimmy scoffs that she won’t get anywhere without his help as a persistent Donna goes back to hitchhiking.

Jimmy, who is just as stubborn, tells her he knows a thing or two about food trucks so she should let him give her a hand. He goes on to tell her he grew up in the country, worked on the oil patch and learned how to fix a thing or two. And now, he’s a big deal in the Calgary Food Truck industry. He can assist her in more ways than one.

Donna is an ambassador for joy. She has a passion for creating solutions so that there’s more happiness in her world. But sometimes she forgets not everything, or everyone, wants to be fixed or take risks like she does.
