SYNOPSIS:

BAD RAP is a story about friendship, the perils of judging others by their appearance and redemption. BAD RAP delivers a diverse cast of misfits on a zany adventure who use their good hearts and bad judgment to solve a mystery.

The story is in between It’s A Wonderful Life and Ted Lasso. It’s similar to It’s a Wonderful Life since there is an angel character trying to help an incorrigible man. Yet, its similar to Ted Lasso, since it delivers colorful characters, a tongue-in-cheek comedic tone and physical humor.

The story delves into the themes of do the right thing, the dangers of judging others by their exterior and forgiveness.

The script was a top ten winner in the Florida Comedy Film Festival, in 2020. Link is below.

BAD RAP

Act One: RAYZR RUCKUS, African-American, (20’s), is an unemployed, friendless, highly opinionated former teen Rap Star who suddenly gets framed for the murder of a Senator’s son. Rayzr reluctantly runs from the law with the only person who can save him from life in prison…an angel disguised as a professional mini-wrestler, named GRANDE, (30’s).

Grande’s goals are to help Rayzr get his rap career back, prove his innocence and transform him from a selfish, know-it-all, jerk back to the good guy he used to be… all within a week. However, Rayzr wants no part of Grande. Rayzr has no interest in having friends and can’t let go of grudges against people from his past. The rapper also doubts the small person next to him is really an angel and refuses to trust him. But, the clock starts ticking when the guys learn that the real killer who framed Rayzr is in LA, and they only have a few days to travel across the country to find him! Rayzr is hesitant to leave Brooklyn with Grande until a TV news story announces Rayzr is a prime suspect in the Senator’s son murder case, and approaching police sirens grow louder.

Act Two: The bickering buddies don’t trust each other, yet work together to escape Brooklyn and hitch rides to Los Angeles. With the FBI one step behind, the penniless duo goes to extremes to disguise themselves and earn money as they travel across the US. In Indiana, the fugitives dress up as female roller derby skaters to win prize money and Rayzr falls in love with the sassy and beautiful team captain, SMACKYA SILLY, (20’s).

In Branson, MO, Rayzr earns coin by impersonating the great R&B performers Barry White and MC Hammer, only to have the money lost when he fights with Grande. Both guys feel awful about fighting, since their relationship is blossoming into an honest friendship. Yet, Rayzr is still suspect of Grande’s angel status and motives. Things get pretty stinky as the boys dig up a cesspool in Beverly Hills. Then, it gets worse when Grande gets pinched by the cops and Smackya dumps Rayzr for not being truthful.

Act Three: Rayzr is miserable, since he’s alone and misses his pal, Grande. Tick-tock...Rayzr has only 24 hours left to find the real killer of the Senator’s son and prove his innocence - or else it’s life in jail! After meeting a woman from his past, Rayzr realizes he was judging and hating people for the wrong reasons and is ashamed. After thinking through his situation, Rayzr realizes how honest Grande has been and vows to make it up to his small friend. Rayzr also figures out who set him up and must overcome a lifelong fear and risk it all to capture the bad guy who framed him.

The Climax: Just when it looks like Rayzr's fight is in vain and the bad guy is about to take Rayzr’s life, Rayzr is saved by the people he used to dislike. After DNA testing proves Rayzr’s innocence, he realizes his hurtful ways and opens his heart to treat all people equally. Rayzr is excited to finally have a real friend in Grande. However, Grande’s job is done and he goes to heaven, but leaves a note saying he’ll be back. The heart-broken Rayzr realizes Grande really was an angel and crumbles into tears. Yet, Rayzr eventually smiles again knowing Grande will return and they’ll have more crime solving adventures in the future. Rayzr makes amends with everyone he was a jerk to and pursues Smackya’s heart. Then Rayzr returns to the big stage and reignites his Rap career with a heart-felt, musical tribute to Grande.
