Mostro, her lover, is now dead leaving Scarlet all alone in her dreary house with her untrustworthy gardener, Passarino, who harbours ill intentions when he discovers the only relic Mostro left behind: a mysterious black box.
SYNOPSIS:
Based on an award winning poem published by Scholastic in 2008 entitled ''Black Box,'' the story details a female protagonist named Scarlet, who is still coping with the loss of her late lover, Mostro. Since his death, Scarlet deliberately lets her garden die as winter approaches, preferring instead to mourn for the remainder of her life. Mostro has left behind a black box, discovered by Scarlet’s scheming gardener, Passarino. Believing Mostro’s black box harbours secret treasures, Passarino buries the box in the garden, keeping it hidden from Scarlet. Later that night, Passarino returns to claim the box, but instead of treasures, he finds a piece of Mostro’s dismembered heart. Hearing Passarino’s mortified screams, Scarlet arrives in the garden to investigate. When she discovers Mostro’s box in the possession of Passarino, he lies to her by saying Mostro asked him to discard it, as his final wish. Scarlet chooses to spare Passarino this heavy responsibility by discarding the box herself. But when she lights a fire and disposes of the box into the flames, the box lets out an agonising scream. The box was meant to be a gift to her from Mostro, and she unknowingly destroys it.
