A shy nebbish who transforms into a charismatic action hero whenever he's in danger goes on run from the Mob with his therapist, but when she falls in love with him he’s faced with a dilemma: if he gets them out of danger he'll go back to being a nobody and lose her love, but if he doesn't, they'll lose their lives.
SYNOPSIS:
At a late-night supermarket, Johnny the nebbish turns into his fearless persona when faced with the danger of armed robbers. He fends off the bad guys and wins the girl, a shopper who falls for his James Bond-level charms, but immediately loses her when he reverts back into loser Johnny. Unnerved by the danger he was in, Johnny seeks help from CLARA, a behavioral therapist. Clara gets a taste of Johnny’s magnetism and action hero chops when he demonstrates his psychosis by hanging outside her office window. She consults with MAX, her therapist and ex-husband, but ignores his warnings that she’s losing her professional detachment.
Johnny is swept up in the affairs of HANDSOME LOU, a mobster who wears a "Phantom of the Opera" mask to hide a tiny scar only he can see, when Clara takes him to a dance club to work on his interpersonal skills. Handsome Lou’s thugs set fire to the club to intimidate the owner, but dangerous Johnny puts out the fire while dancing the tango with Clara. Later, on his job as a safety inspector, nebbishy Johnny accidentally takes photos of Handsome Lou with his mistress. Handsome Lou fears Johnny has been sent by a rival to take him down and will interfere with his plan to blow up every police precinct in town to get revenge on them for scratching his face in a shootout. He orders a hit on Johnny and on Clara, whom he believes is in cahoots with Johnny.
Now that he’s in constant danger from Handsome Lou’s thugs, for the first time in his life Johnny is able to stay in his action hero persona. Which makes it the first time in his life he has a chance to fall in love. Clara tries to resist her unprofessional attraction for a psychotic patient but Johnny’s sheer wonderfulness is too much for her – and for Johnny, the feeling is mutual.
Johnny becomes more incredible with each threat he faces until the attraction other women feel for him sparks a quarrel with Clara. She leaves Johnny – and is kidnapped by Handsome Lou.
Johnny rushes to save Clara, though he knows that ending the danger will turn him back into a nobody. He walks right into the mobster’s lair and declares his love for Clara. He’s almost defeated when Max convinces Johnny that he’s safe, making him easy prey. In the nick of time, Clara’s cry of distress resurrects the dangerous Johnny to save the day and even patch up Handsome Lou’s marriage.
The danger is past. Johnny wants Clara to remember him as the incredible man he’s been, not the sorry loser he’s about to become. They say a regretful farewell -- only to discover that nebbishy Johnny is gone! Clara realizes that for Johnny, the feeling of being in love is exactly the same as the feeling of being in danger. Clara and Johnny will live happily – and dangerously – forever after.
