After an earthshaking one-night stand, a loner hitwoman has to save a regular guy from her enemies but risks everything when she falls in love with him.
SYNOPSIS:
A professional assassin needs a boyfriend like she needs a bullet hole in the head. Loving someone is kryptonite, and kryptonite makes you dead. RILEY SEVERIN is too smart for that - it's one-night stands for her, and only after a hit, when she's too wired to sleep.
But after a night of earthshaking, never-like-this-before sex with LEOPOLD BLOOM, a writer who's never faced anything more dangerous than a paper cut, he refuses to let it be just one night. He tracks down her hotel and shows up with a bouquet of flowers – which she puts a stop to with a right cross to his head. She has bigger things to worry about – her boss JANE DOE insists she take on a contract to kill a woman, but Riley has a code: no colleagues, no civilians, and -- no women.
So it’s the last thing she wants to deal with when she finds her new hotel room filled with flowers and a nice note from Leo forgiving her. She asks her Mob leg-breaker colleague TONY to discourage him, but Tony falls for Leopold’s charm and ships him and Riley. While she’s brushing off Leopold once again, someone takes a shot at him. It turns out to be Jane Doe, using Leopold to force Riley to go through with the hit. Riley is pissed – this is exactly why she avoids relationships! And she’s not even in a relationship with the guy!
Riley is forced to admit to Leo what she does for a living, expecting him to run in horror – which, deep down, is her very worst fear about relationships -- but to her surprise, after the initial shock he declares that he can hang. At Leo’s suggestion she rescues the target, KIRABO KAMAU, who claims innocence and irritates the hell out of Riley by flirting with Leopold.
But Kirabo turns out to be the head of a startup rival hit-man agency, and she has designs to steal Riley from Jane. Her suspicions toward Leopold stoked, Riley waterboards him – but all he has to confess is how smitten he is by her. She makes love to him again, a first for her.
Now Riley really does have kryptonite. Desperate to save Leo, she resolves to break her code and kill her colleagues that Jane Doe sends after her. But Leo knows breaking her code will break her spirit, so he surrenders to Jane’s people. All Riley has to do is what she’s done all along – loudly proclaim that Leopold means nothing to her – and Jane will let him go and it’ll all be over. But Riley can’t do that. She surrenders to Jane to free Leopold.
Now it’s up to Leopold, with the help of Tony and other business associates of Riley that she’s always kept at arm’s length, to save her. Together they figure out Jane Doe’s kryptonite, and Kirabo’s, and cobble together a peace deal. Riley ends up with a boyfriend who accepts her just as she is and a close-knit group of friends who become the family she never had.
