SEEKING GOLD

Diagnosed with cancer, an elite athlete seeks forgiveness from his adult son before it's too late and tries to help him win an Olympic gold medal.

SYNOPSIS:

Mark Hatfield is a world class racewalker in his late 50’s. He abandoned his son, Brian McCoy when Brian was 8 to pursue his Olympic dreams. Brian now is trying to follow his father to prove he is better than him. Brian sees his father while he is winning the Georgia Marathon at Stone Mountain Park. Mark doesn’t recognize his son. Mark is asked by a U.S. Olympic Committee member to carry the torch through Dallas, TX because of his family’s close association with the Olympics and he agrees, causing his delayed honeymoon to be further delayed.. Mark discovers he has cancer and decides to ask Brian for forgiveness. Mark is signing his autobiography and is confronted by Brian, it doesn’t end well. Mark who expresses a desire to have no more children learns that his much younger wife is pregnant.

Brian is out training and is struck by a car. Mark is driving past and feels like he hit a deer. Mark comes to the hospital out of concern and guilt. Mark tries to offer his payers and help. Mark’s ex-wife Samantha comes in and confronts Mark in the ICU waiting area. Samantha’s current abusive husband and Brian’s step father confronts Mark and Samantha. They all learn that Brian is likely paralyzed as a result of the injury. Mark offers to help Brian complete his goal of finishing 50 marathons in 50 states. After much discussion, Brian reluctantly agrees. Later, Brian learns that Mark is suspected as the hit and run driver and all training is stopped. Mark is eventually cleared.

Mark and his parish priest travel to Buffalo, NY where Fr. Abraham tries to seek forgiveness from his dying father, but it not given as the father dies. Brian agrees to be trained and they enter the Boston Marathon as a duo entry. They continue to train, while Mark’s cancer gets worse. Mark has to undergo chemotherapy and is weakened from it but continues on.

Mark and Samantha are having dinner when Gloria enters. She is eight months pregnant and confronts them. In the confrontation, she goes into labor and delivers a boy but dies in childbirth. Mark goes to the Boston Marathon expo to get their numbers and is given one that has not been earned due to his son’s reputation. On the day of the race, they cover all twenty-six miles. At the finish line, Mark collapses. He is taken to the hospital, where he is in ICU. Prayers and love bring Mark around. Brian and Mark receive the 2020 Paralympic gold medal for the marathon. The movie ends with Mark replacing a framed shadowbox of his failed Olympic bid with the winning medal.
