BILL LAND

BILL LAND
By David C C Erickson

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

When an activist grade-school teacher declares his condemned childhood home a country of its own, he takes on the United States of America in a battle for independence - to stop the wrecking ball from demolishing his nation

SYNOPSIS:

BILL-LAND is about what happens when your dreams of freedom come true. For better or worse.

Bill Philpott discovers that his weed-ridden yard and run-down Victorian style mansion - scheduled for demolition by the city - is actually its own country, when he comes across musty paperwork dating back to 1779, proclaiming that his property’s a sovereign nation and “all who dwell upon it” are its citizens. The agreement, forged by the founders of our country, is binding in perpetuity and the United States has no choice but to consent to its terms. For now.

A 4th grade history teacher inspired by the American Revolution, Bill’s determined to save his home and take on the daunting task of building a new nation - beginning with appointing his divorce lawyer brother Attorney General.

However, his enthusiasm’s short-lived when he comes up against the Deputy Secretary of State, whose sworn duty is to make Bill give up his dream of independence and relinquish his claim to his own country. By any means necessary. Including parachuting in a CIA agent with orders to infiltrate and overthrow.

The Deputy Secretary resorts to harassment, intimidation, and ultimately the destruction of Bill’s house in his underhanded attempts to change Bill’s mind. Bill’s understandably discouraged and nearly gives up on his dream, but - inspired by the donation of a new home from IKEA (comes in a flat box with an instruction manual) - he soldiers on.

The Deputy Secretary’s put on a short leash when the President discovers what he’s been up to and finally grants official recognition of Bill-Land as its own country (primarily because it’s an election year and the President doesn’t want to play the bad guy).

In the final scene, Bill and his wife welcome their newborn daughter into the world, the first citizen by birth of Bill-Land.
