SYNOPSIS:

Synopsis:

We meet teenager Mackenzie as she readies for her school day. Mackenzie is socially awkward, and has no friends. She finds her happiness through her popular fashion influencer posts where she can avoid personal contact. She attends the posh, private Overton Academy which caters to the children of the upper class residents of Beverly Pointe.

Classmate Kayla readies for school across town in a working class neighborhood. Her single mom, a police officer, has worked hard to get Kayla into Overton. With Kayla’s good grades she’s earned a scholarship, but has kept it a secret from the other students, especially her closest friends who are members of a tight clique of popular girls.

Arriving at school, Mackenzie tries to quickly pass Kayla’s clique in the way to class, but queen bee Allison makes a point of teasing her. The others laugh along, with the exception of Kayla. Kayla is terrified of being outed as a "poor loser".

The annual school dance is coming up and it’s the social event of the season for the students. Allison insists on everyone attending and dressing in designer fashions. For Kayla, this presents a problem as she doesn’t have the money for a new dress and can’t expose her secret to the others.

Kayla goes to a consignment shop in search of an inexpensive gown. Mackenzie, shopping in the store, overhears Kayla’s plea to find a dress she can afford. Mackenzie proposes a deal: she will buy Kayla an expensive designer gown in exchange for Kayla pretending they are best friends. Kayla agrees.

Kayla and Mackenzie’s new friendship is a puzzle to the other girls in the clique. Allison vows to get to the bottom of this friendship of opposites and break them up. As Kayla and Mackenzie grow closer, the other girls start to like her as well, to the consternation of Allison.

Allison tries to break them up, but fails. She asks her father to run a background check on them to dig up dirt. Allison cheats on a math test and frames Kayla, jeopardizing her scholarship. When Allison learns of Kayla’s real background she makes plans to confront them both.

What is intended to be a small gathering of the clique at Mackenzie’s house, turns into a nightmare as Allison invites others and the party gets out of hand. After some property damage and a breakdown by Mackenzie, the police are called and Kayla’s mom shows up. Allison exposes the secret and forces Kayla to choose between the clique and Mackenzie or she will tell the entire school. Tearfully, Kayla chooses to stay with Allison and the others. Mackenzie is devastated.

The night of the dance, Kayla remains at home. The doorbell rings and it’s Mackenzie with the dress and a limo. They make up and go to the dance. At the dance, Allison make good on her threat to expose Kayla’s secret to the school. It backfires as Mackenzie makes fun about Allison’s out of style and horrid dress and posts it to social media. Allison is humiliated in front of the school.

A few months later, Mackenzie and Kayla are sitting at a café in Kayla’s neighborhood. Their server approaches to take their order, and it’s Allison. She’s being punished by her father for cheating on the test and running up his credit cards.
