Synopsis:
Fourteen year-old Tucker is an average 8h grader. His crush and science lab partner Emma rebuffs his advances as he’s not adventurous enough for her, spending his free time playing video games. They have a science project due, and Tucker has put off getting the lab work done.
With the lab closed due to their teacher being on leave, Tucker must finish the project to stay in Emma’s good graces. He asks the Dean of Students, Mr. Chamley to open the lab for him. He reluctantly agrees. When Tucker goes to the lab and finds the door open, but nobody there, he is accused by Mr. Chamley of breaking into the lab and is sent to detention.
Detention is in the basement of a century-old building on the private school campus. Old office equipment, newspaper archives, vintage computers, and a noisy steam boiler fill the space. Tucker is joined by Bostwick, an angry, sullen student who is constantly in detention, and Becca, a trouble-making Goth girl.
Together with aging hippie detention teacher Mr. Surdu they figure out the real reason Mr. Chamley has put Tucker and the others there: to hide his search for a treasure of silver buried somewhere on the campus by the school’s founder, Jebediah Overton. Jebediah was a wealthy miner, who founded the school for his workers’ children. He had no family and hid his silver treasure on the school’s campus, only to have its whereabouts lost when he died almost 100 years earlier. The legend of the lost silver treasure has been part of school lore ever since.
The teens use the steam tunnels that run underground from the boiler room throughout the campus to search for more clues but are thwarted by Mr. Chamley. After their stint in detention they decide they need to go back to finish their sleuthing under cover.
They enlist Emma and deliberately start a food fight in the cafeteria sending them all to detention. While there, they complete their plan to find the treasure by using the old microfilm archives to solve the clues and the vintage school equipment to forge hall passes so they can quietly move around the campus.
After putting the clues together, they figure out the treasure’s location, a secret vault, but Mr. Chamley has beaten them to the punch. They are locked in the vault while Chamley plans his escape with the silver bars he’s discovered. The teens escape from their captivity and enlist the help of Tucker’s friend Carter who, with his Safety Patrol buddies, and amid the chaos of parent pick-up, stop Chamley and recover the treasure.
At a party celebrating the 100th anniversary of the school, the kids are praised for solving the mystery. Tucker realizes that the treasure that Chamley found was only a small portion; the rest of the treasure is hidden in the base of a statue of the founder in the courtyard. Tucker reveals the remaining treasure impressing not only the school’s headmistress, but Emma as well.
