SYNOPSIS:

SYNOPSIS:

Mia is a 13 year old eighth grader. She’s outgoing and loves to be the center of attention. She thinks she’s “all that”, but doesn’t know that even her friends think she is too bossy. She has a crush on Ian, a cute, but clueless boy.

It’s morning of a typical school day, and Mia arrives at Overton Academy and private K-12 school. Mia greets her friends, Haley and Chloe. They talk about plans for the weekend, and Mia pushes her ideas and is oblivious to their annoyance with her. They talk about the upcoming science fair and their ideas for projects. Mia is excited and determined to do a project on extrasensory perception (ESP) while dismissing Chloe’s idea.

After Mia leaves for class, Haley and Chloe discuss kicking her out of their friend group for being bossy and being self-centered.

Before class they three of them run into Ian, a cute boy. It’s obvious Mia has a crush on him. What’s not so obvious to her is that Chloe and Ian are hiding something.

In science class, the teacher, Mr. Steinfeld makes the partner assignments for the science fair project. Chloe and Ian are paired up. Carter, a student obsessed with any related to zombies is paired with Trisha. Mia is paired up with Vijay who obviously has a crush on her, referring to her as “princess”. Mia is annoyed.

Vijay is excited about the project and to Mia’s surprise likes her ESP topic. His grandfather studied it and he has his old testing equipment. They agree to meet at Vijay’s house to work on the project.

Vijay’s family, like many prominent families that send their children to Overton, are well-off. Vijay invites Mia to his set up in the guest house. Inside, he has set up a table with a machine with a headpiece attached with a cable. He is going to use Zener cards which have symbols for the test subject to guess and therefore prove they have ESP. Mia puts on the helmet contraption and Vijay begins the experiment.

The experiment goes haywire, with the helmet shocking Mia unconscious. When she wakes up she can read Vijay’s mind and hear her mother’s thoughts as she arrives outside. Her head hurts and she is confused. She leaves with her mom to go home and rest.

At school the next day, she reveals to Vijay that she can read minds. She has to concentrate to be able to filter out multiple thoughts and its very stressful and causes headaches. They decide to keep it a secret, as Mia is afraid she will be taken away for experiments. Vijay agrees to keep it a secret.

Mia is in history class. The teacher, Ms. Donovan, hands out the quiz. Mia is having trouble concentrating with all the other student’s thoughts invading her mind. She decides to focus on a few students to get the answers for the quiz. She confesses her cheating to Vijay who scolds her.

During lunch, Mia reads Chloe and Ian’s minds and discovers they have been secretly dating. The truth comes out how her friends think about her and everything blows up. In the aftermath, Mia is kicked out of the friend group.

Later that day, Ms. Donovan confronts Mia about her quiz score as the answers are suspicious and she thinks she cheated. Mia uses her mind reading powers to deduce that Ms. Donovan doesn’t have any evidence and denies cheating. She is sent to talk to the Headmistress of the school, Ms. McGuire.

Waiting for Ms. McGuire, Mia reads Ms. McGuire’s mind and finds out the school may close for lack of funds and dwindling enrollment. Mia is sad to lose her school and friends.

Mia tells Vijay about the fate of the school. Her mom arrives home to say that a national middle school quiz show was going to use a local venue for their travelling show, but they lost their venue due to a flood. Her mom, a party planner, has been tasked to find a new venue. Vijay explains that the show is one of his favorites and there’s a $500,000 prize for winning, which gets Mia’s attention. She convinces her mom to offer Overton’s auditorium and she will talk to Ms. McGuire. Her mom agrees.

Mia convinces Ms. McGuire to allow the show to use the auditorium as there will be a hefty rental fee. The show’s producer Mr. Anderson arrives to check out the venue. Mia uses her mind reading powers to negotiate a higher rental fee. After finding out one of the teams can’t make it, she also convinces him to let Overton compete for the prize. With no time for another substitute team, Mr. Anderson agrees.

Mia and Vijay assemble the team. Mia apologizes to Haley and Chloe, but they are cautious. When they demand that Ian is on the team along with Carter and Trisha, Mia reverts to her bossy self, but when checked by her friends, she agrees to the team.

The kids study with Mr. Steinfeld. It’s obvious the team isn’t the best, especially Carter who can only focus on zombies. Mia promises Vijay not to use her powers to cheat in the game.

It’s the night of the quiz show. The team checks out the competition. Mia notices one boy on one of the other teams seems to be very nervous, but assumes it’s just the pressure of national television.

The quiz show begins. At the first commercial break, Mia notices Mr. Anderson arguing with the quiz show host, Bob Walters. He hands Bob a new set of question cards. Mia tries to read their minds, but doesn’t understand what they are thinking, but hears Mr. Anderson thinking about $250,000 that he will get. She figures out that the game is rigged and the nervous student is the ringer. She explains to Vijay that he probably arranged with their school to split the prize money. Vijay tells her it’s okay to use her powers for good.

The quiz show continues. Mia tries to use her powers to read the nervous student’s mind, but has a seizure and faints. Everyone rushes in to help her and the show goes to commercial. Mia insists she’s okay and just needs some water. She realizes her powers are gone and tells Vijay. There is one last question and the team to buzz in and get it right will win the game.

Bob reads the question, but before he can finish it Carter buzzes in to everyone’s surprise. Bob finishes the question which Carter triumphantly yells out the correct answer: “ZOMBIES!”. Overton has won the quiz show prize.

The next day, Ms. McGuire thanks everyone and is delighted. Overton is getting a lot of attention leading to inquiries interested in enrollment and the prize money will help keep the school afloat. Mia thanks Vijay and agrees to date him, but taking it slow.
