A veteran baseball player must clear his name from the murder of a pop star during the regular season.
SYNOPSIS:
OVERVIEW
“Seventh Inning Stretch” is an edge-of-your-seat action-thriller that is set around America’s favorite pastime – Baseball – and the relationships that happen both on and off the field. A pitcher and a catcher make a pact from a very young age to always stay together, but the pact is temporarily suspended when one has the opportunity to make it in the big leagues. When these two former teammates finally reunite after a decade apart, suppressed feelings of resentment surface and have deadly consequences.
When a famous popstar is murdered, the entire team is brought under fire as several of the players are viewed as potential suspects. Friendship, loyalty and trust between teammates are put to the ultimate test. After all, if your teammate doesn’t have your back off the field, how can you trust them on it?
Tonally, the film will be a collision of different genres—action, drama, suspense, even some comedy. This is baseball as we have never seen it before… And will never look at it the same again.
CHARACTER SET-UP:
We meet our main characters DEVIN SATTERFIELD and ANDRES SANCHEZ in a high school hallway, when they are about to accept their full rides for their prowess on the field from a college baseball recruiter. They made a pact in elementary school to stick together as catcher and pitcher for as long as they both play ball, and the promise of playing for the same college strengthens that pact. They fully anticipate that they will honor that pact until—
COLLEGE. Two years later. Devin is packing up his car and saying goodbye to Andres as he heads off to Spring Training for Major League Baseball. Rather than being excited for his friend, Andres sends Devin on a guilt trip about leaving him and breaking the pact. Even though Devin explains that it is only temporary, Andres is devastated and clearly resents his decision. Devin is sure that they’ll play together again, and they do, in…
The bustling city of Los Angeles, California, ten years later. Andres has been playing on the California Condors for three years, but feels that his thunder is stolen when Devin agrees to be traded to the team. Known for his bat as well as his glove, Devin is the epitome of a five tool player. Even though Devin just wants to play out his career with the best pitcher he’s ever known – who also happens to be his best friend – Andres feels threatened, but hides his feelings from his old pal.
Devin is the top player in the major leagues, while Andres was the top player on his team. Neither of them realize exactly how dark the shadows of their past really are.
STORY:
We meet our main characters during a time of hope and confidence; a time when they are invincible: senior year as the two most popular jocks in high school. Convinced that ALBERT INTONATO, a baseball recruiter from their first choice college BHU, is there to sign both to full baseball scholarships, the boys feel as though they are on top of the world. When they find out that only Devin was offered the scholarship, Devin is supported by his FATHER when he rejects the scholarship in order to honor the pact they made to stay together in elementary school. Caught between a rock and a hard place, Intonato makes a phone call.
Two years later, we find Devin packing up his dorm room and walking out to a car where Andres is waiting. Devin has been scouted and has signed with a Major League Baseball team. This means that Devin is off to live the dream they both had, and leave Andres behind—even if it is temporary. Crushed, Andres lets Devin know how disappointed he is, but Devin brushes it off. After all, it’s the Big Leagues, and his best friend is just upset that he’s leaving...right?
When Devin’s beautiful girlfriend KATE JOHNSON comes to say goodbye, we can see that the wedge between Devin and Andres is a little bigger than Devin can see. Kate asks Andres to allow her to have a private moment with Devin, and Andres obliges. Unfortunately, Kate’s goodbye isn’t what Devin expects—It’s a full-fledged breakup so that Devin can focus on baseball. Crushed, Devin seeks solace in his best friend as Kate walks away, tears unseen by Devin and Andres flowing down her cheeks.
Fast forward ten years, inside the home stadium of the California Condors. Devin is on the first baseline as the National Anthem is sung by the beautiful and talented popstar SAPPHYRE, flanked by his teammates. Sapphyre finishes her rendition, and very publicly declares her love for a shocked Devin in front of a full stadium. Teased by his teammates, Devin takes the field and it is business as usual.
During his interview with clubhouse reporter SIDNEY SAMUEL, we learn that Devin was traded to the California Condors after the All-Star break. It’s a late season trade, which is rare for a vet and star player like Devin, but when the regular catcher went onto the DL, Devin agreed to the trade so that he could play on the same team with his old best friend Andres.
