MILES AWAY
By Chris Henderson

GENRE: Historical, Fantasy
LOGLINE:

When a troubled foster-teen is rescued from would-be assassins by his long lost father, he finds himself swept up in a war across the ages to prevent an ancient evil from enslaving mankind.

SYNOPSIS:

For over a millenia, the ORDER has fought to keep GAIUS LLOTH in-check and powerless. With time as their ally, the Order has kept the ancient artifacts that the demon hungers for beyond its reach. More importantly, the Order’s next generation of warriors live safely tucked away in the distant future where no harm can come to them before they come of age. But something has gone terribly wrong; their decapitated heads have been sent back to their parents. And MILES DRAVEN is next.

Virginia, 2020--Miles Draven is relentlessly bullied by a bigger and stronger classmate. He tries to shrug off the abuse instead of fighting back, but when the taunts cross the line by mentioning his parent’s abandonment of him, Miles snaps and brutally attacks the boy, sending him to the hospital.

Later that night, Miles’ home is invaded by assassins who murder his foster parents and take aim at him. Running for his life, he is saved by a mysterious man who thwarts the assassins and whisks him off to safety. To Miles' disbelief, the man claims to be not only his father, MATTHIAS DRAVEN, but a time traveler too. To keep him safe, Matthias takes Miles back to 1863 where he's reunited with his family.

Miles learns that he is part of an ancient Order of "chronoshifters” who fight to keep Gauis Lloth, a demon, from ushering in an age of darkness. To do that, they must keep the beast from gathering a series of ancient artifacts that will allow it to reconstitute its power. And while the Order has kept the demon at bay for centuries, a series of brutal murders has left Miles the sole surviving member of the next generation. Knowing the demon is trapped in the present day (June of 1613), his parents conclude that there are traitors in their midst. Knowing they must be ready to fight, they make training Miles their top priority.

Matthias teaches Miles how to “chronoshift” by visiting CHARLES ALBRIGHT, a close friend and member of the Order. Mourning the loss of his recently deceased wife, Charles' pain is magnified by the sudden disappearance of his children, ANNELISE and TREVOR. He fears the worst has befallen them.

When the Draven homestead is burned to the ground, Charles takes the family in. That night, they're awakened by traitorous chronoshifters who have broken into the home in search of Charles' diary, which details the location of the family’s guarded artifact. The turncoats attempt to escape but are stopped by Annelise, who has been tailing them for weeks. She unmasks her brother Trevor as their leader, and a short battle ensues. Charles is killed and the traitors, along with Trevor, escape with the diary.

After Charles’ funeral, Annelise reveals that Trevor allied himself with the demon in the hopes that it would grant him immortality if he helped it reclaim the artifacts. Additionally, Annelise learned that Trevor was responsible for murdering several of the next generation to prove his fealty to the demon. Now that his actions have caused the death of their father, she denounces him as her brother and seeks revenge.

Annelise and the Dravens determine that the artifact is buried beneath the Globe Theater, which is destined to burn down only days later. The fire is the perfect opportunity for unearthing the artifact without drawing the Order's attention, or so Gaius thinks. The Dravens and Annelise prepare for battle.

With the Globe burning around them, they battle against their traitorous brethren who stand between them and the artifact. Annelise attacks Trevor who pleads with her to listen to him. He proves to her that he is innocent of all crimes, including their father's death. Their reconciliation ends tragically when another traitor kills Trevor and is poised to finish off Annelise. Miles, however, steps in to vanquish the traitor, saving her life. They recover Charles’ diary and escape before the structure collapses. The diary proves Trevor's innocence, and leads them to the children Trevor had cleverly hidden away and not murdered.

Jeff Reyes

I think that second half is a bit out of nowhere. It needs to flow a bit more from the first sentence.

"Miles, an angry foster-teen, is rescued from assassins by a man who claims to be his time-traveling father. [After they learn that] an ancient evil [has followed his father through a vortex,] Miles must find the hero within himself to stop the evil from enslaving mankind."

I know that's not what happened, but just a bit easier to give an example to show you what I mean.

Thank you for the feedback, Jeff. I made a change to the logline which, I think, simplifies and streamlines it.
