SYNOPSIS:
Minnesota native Theresa Peterson plans to have a great Christmas with her entire family. Her career is blossoming thanks to her newest creation: Pogo Kicks. They’re the hottest selling Christmas toy of the decade and every kid wants a pair. The commercial even features her youngest son, Mikey, in the lead role and he becomes a local celebrity. After a challenging year of home renovations and harsh weather, her husband Andy is ready to fulfill his life-long dream of living in Miami. He owns a successful bakery and the idea of moving is intriguing to Theresa so they make a deal. If Pogo Kicks sells 10 million units and Andy is able to get a legitimate offer on his pastry shop, they'll put the house up for sale. Her teenage kids, Darren, Marie and Stephen are ecstatic for their mom’s success, but are split about whether the family should relocate or not.
Soon after, both Andy and Theresa’s brothers and sisters arrive for Christmas, but their bickering quickly begins to annoy the family. Andy, however, maintains a positive attitude, determined to have a "fun old-fashioned family Christmas". He covers the house's entire exterior with twinkle lights in addition to parade size Frosty and Santa inflatables; much to the dismay of his snooty neighbors, Rich and Tiffany Taylor. Unbeknownst to anyone, Darren is secretly dating their daughter, Kelly.
Later on at work, Andy’s realtor introduces him to a wealthy Swedish businessman who makes an unbelievable offer to buy the bakery. Andy hesitantly accepts and makes Darren promise to keep quiet until he can tell Theresa himself. While standing in the living room admiring the Christmas tree decorations, Andy is shocked to see Theresa’s hippie-based cousin Carol as she arrives unannounced with her children, Timmy, Laurie-Ann, and her giant baby,Tank.
During dinner, Darren and Theresa get in a heated argument over Darren’s decision to drop out of college and go on tour with his band. He’s one semester shy of graduating but the tour can’t happen unless he’s there. Andy attempts to defuse the situation by announcing to everyone that he’s sold his bakery. The buyer plans to demolish the building and turn it into two storefronts. Theresa is shocked that he would make this decision without her input. That night, Marie attends a party where she plans to break up with her long-time boyfriend, but he beats her to the punch and she is devastated. With the help of Mikey and Timmy, Stephen finally musters up enough courage to ask out his high school crush, Jamie, and takes her to the roller rink where they have an amazing night. Darren asks Kelly to join him on tour, but she's unsure it's the best idea.
During their annual Christmas Eve party, friends, family and co-workers, dance, eat and celebrate. Mikey realizes how much he’ll miss home if they move. Stephen and Jamie share their first kiss while Kelly accepts Darren's invitation to join him on tour. Theresa finally receives an envelope from UPS which contains a generous offer for the house. This prompts her to give a speech explaining what the holidays mean to her and how grateful she is for all the people in their lives. She comes to the conclusion that they don’t need to move to be happy. Andy agrees and the crowd goes wild rejoicing in celebration.
Andy and Theresa then race to the bakery and convince the Swedish businessman to sell the store back to them before he can demolish it. He agrees, but he wants a significant offer that is almost double what it’s worth. Andy reluctantly agrees just before the wrecking ball smashes through the building, and the bakery is once again owned by the Peterson’s. When they get home, Theresa gathers everyone around the piano as the entire party sings Christmas carols. Outside, Tank inadvertently lights off fireworks, but they change course mid-flight and land in the Taylor’s fireplace. Andy and Theresa happily share a Christmas kiss and look outside to see the Taylor’s with their snooty friends run out on the lawn, covered in soot as more fireworks ring out in the sky.
